When Jesus saw Peter and Andrew throwing their nets into the lake He called them to something more than making a living. He wanted to give them something that was really worth living for.
And dying for.
He said, “Follow me.” And Peter and Andrew left everything behind to follow Him. Jesus’ call all these years later hasn’t changed. He’s still calling us to follow Him. What has changed is that we don’t seem to understand in our day what it means to follow Jesus.
The early disciples said yes and then traveled with Him everywhere He went for the next few years. We answer yes, but we don’t really go where He wants us to go. Sometimes we do. But much of the time, we don’t. Like the rich young man, we’re too busy pursuing our own interests. Or we’re too afraid to go places where He seems to be leading. We play it safe.
