Let the spotlight fall on us

New from David Murray

David Murray, one of my favorite bloggers, has launched a new series of posts which I believe will serve us well if we allow it. By "us" I mean Reformed and Reformed-ish pastors. Murray writes:

Persevering Grace, Part 4

Theme: God Will Establish, Strengthen, and Settle You

This week’s lessons encourage us with the truth that because God always finishes what he begins, every true believer will receive God’s eternal glory in Christ.

Scripture: 1 Peter 5:10

God will establish you. The idea conveyed by this verb is to be established in a firm, defensive position so that the attacks of the devil will not dislodge the Christian from it. The one who is established will be able to hold his or her ground.

Do No Harm

Another follow-up to my T4G post...

I continue to receive a great deal of feedback on my post in which I urge the organizers of T4G to not include CJ Mahaney. Some of the feedback (both positive and negative) has been quite helpful. As you can imagine I have heard from those who are convinced that Mahaney is the worst sort of human being and others who strongly support him believing all the charges to be false.

Always a Woman

"She can bring out the best and the worst you can be..."

I have an article in the latest issue of the PCA's magazine By Faith. They asked me that super easy question that we all agree on so well, about God's design for women and their relationship to men and the church. Here is an excerpt of my favorite part, which quotes from John McKinley, identifying our design and role as necessary allies. You can click on the link here to read the entire article:

Porch Preaching

Claiming that the Christian God is the only true God is the most loving thing a Christian can do...I believe, “There is but One only, the living and true God.”

My neighborhood is one big loop with homes on each side. It’s an older neighborhood, filled with mature trees that, when covered in leaves, provide almost zero visibility for neighborhood happenings. But I can see all the way around our loop in the winter when deciduous trees stand bare. It was a few weeks ago that I saw them coming. They come in pairs, working house by house...apparently they are Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Not only did Peter learn about suffering from Jesus.  He also learned from Jesus that the only way to resist Satan is through God’s power. You will recall how Jesus told Peter at the Last Supper that “Satan has asked to sift you as wheat” (Luke 22:31). The devil must have meant, “I know you are placing a lot of hope in these twelve disciples that you will be leaving behind when you return to heaven. But it is a hopeless gamble, and I will show you how hopeless it really is. If you will just let me get at Peter, your leading apostle, I will shake him so badly that all his faith will come tumbling out like chaff at threshing time, and he will be utterly ruined.”

Could Big Eva Face a Trump Moment?

Todd Pruitt's post from the other day raises broader questions about the future of Big Eva.

Analyses of the ‘Trump Moment’ in American politics vary in the details but what is clear is that disillusionment with the Washington Establishment -- oft touted in previous elections but rarely seen as having practical electoral significance – might finally be having an impact.   Years of the elites on both sides patting each other on the back, ignoring the concerns of many ordinary Americans, and corralling public discussion using the canons of political correctness have precipitated something of a backlash.  There seems be widespread cynicism about leader

Neither Complementarian nor Egalitarian

A book that won't pack a conference.

My spellcheck has never recognized complementarian as a real word. But in the circles I run in, I am considered extremely suspect if I don’t identify myself as one. It’s a fairly new term, coined less than thirty years ago. As I have been digging deeper into the movement behind this word, I am finding that it carries different implications depending on who is using it.

Here is the third important point we need to know about the background of 1 Peter.
Here is the third important point we need to know about the background of 1 Peter.

Peter wanted to encourage them by the certainty of a glory yet to be come. He does this throughout the letter. In chapter 1 he speaks of the believers’ “living hope” (v. 3), and of “an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for you” (v. 4). He says that their trials have come so that their “faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire, may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed” (v. 7).
