That Awkward Conversation

When someone recommends a bad book.

Have you ever read something that you thought was really good, only to return to it years later with embarrassment for your poor discernment? Or, have you ever really enjoyed a movie, only to be crushed when someone points out how bad the acting was or something disturbing about the message? I think most of us have been there. But it’s even tougher when you are on the other end. Have you ever been in a conversation with a person you care about who is recommending a so-called Christian book that you know is full of bad theology?

Chief of Sinners

We keep lists of the sins of others to remind ourselves that we’re not that bad and to enforce our own justice counter-attacks whenever someone sins against us. But we rarely turn our self-righteous gaze inward. When we do we find skeletons in the closet. We know our sinful actions, some of which are known by other while possibly some of our sins are only know to ourselves. Going deeper, we know our own internal thoughts, motives, and desires. When we looked nice on the outside but inside were fomenting cores of deceit and rage, we still knew the truth of our sin even if nobody else did. If we have to operate from evidence, we are each the biggest sinner that we know.

I am an inerrantist. I believe that the Bible is truthful and without error in every part. But there are two verses that challenge my inerrantist views. No, I’m not quibbling with Metzger or Aland on a textual-critical issue. And I’m not falling prey to some sort of silly trajectory hermeneutic--a favorite tool of exegetes indulging in chronological snobbery.

Falling From Grace - Part 4

Theme: The Third Charge

This week’s lessons teach us what the idea of falling from grace really means, and that the freedom of God’s grace in Christ produces a holy life.

Scripture: Galatians 5:4

The gospel Paul preached leads to loose living. The third charge against Paul was that his gospel of grace through faith abolishes restraints against sin. The Jews had the law, and they had stressed rigorous morality. Therefore, they looked down on Gentiles who did not have the law and lived immoral lives. What would happen if the law should be removed from Gentile churches? Clearly, lawlessness would increase and immorality would rise, according to the legalizers.

Black Lives Matter or black lives matter?

The folly of partnering with the ungodly to achieve racial reconciliation...

I have been weighing for some time the possible benefits and dangers of writing something about the current debate over race relations generally and within the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA) specifically.

Falling From Grace - Part 3

Theme: The Second Charge

This week’s lessons teach us what the idea of falling from grace really means, and that the freedom of God’s grace in Christ produces a holy life.

Scripture: Galatians 5:4

Paul's opponents had probably argued that because the law is God's law and is eternal in its effect (since God's character does not change), keeping the law was and continues to be the way of salvation. They would have claimed that all who have ever been saved have kept the law. Jesus himself kept the law. So did his disciples. Who, then, was Paul to dismiss the requirements of the law as things unnecessary for salvation?

The Reformation: A Bible Movement (Part 3)

If we want to lay hold of the Reformed tradition, may we learn to repent of such arrogance and pursue clarity of thought and expression. God’s word does not change, but the world in which we minister does. May we be committed to the hard work of proclaiming God’s eternal word in the vernacular of the day for the glory of God and for those who will hear it and believe. As we do so, the Holy Spirit will delight to exalt the Lord Jesus Christ. Of that we can be sure.

In the first two posts in this series, we considered the way in which the Reformers viewed the Scriptures as to its authority and clarity. In this final installment, we turn our attention to the need for clarity in the propagation of Scripture for reformation today.

Falling From Grace - Part 2

Theme: The First Charge

This week’s lessons teach us what the idea of falling from grace really means, and that the freedom of God’s grace in Christ produces a holy life.

Scripture: Galatians 5:4

As we read Paul's letter, we are aware that Paul was facing three devastating charges from his opponents: first, that he was no true apostle; second, that the gospel he preached was no true gospel; and third, that the gospel he did preach leads to loose living. Paul answered these charges in the three major sections of the letter: the first in chapters 1 and 2; the second in chapters 3 and 4; and the third in chapters 5 and 6.

Falling From Grace - Part 1

Theme: The Crisis in Galatia

This week’s lessons teach us what the idea of falling from grace really means, and that the freedom of God’s grace in Christ produces a holy life.

Scripture: Galatians 5:4

In the fifth chapter of Galatians there is a reference to grace that has assumed an importance in some people's thinking far beyond the Apostle Paul's use of it and entirely out of keeping with his context. It is the phrase “fallen from grace.” Perhaps it came to your mind when I was writing about “standing in grace” last week.
