Some years ago I attended a service where the preacher noted he was thankful that God the Son had come in the flesh and that two natures, the divine and the human, were “blended” in one person for us and for our salvation. When I heard that I did a double-take because if what he said was true, we could not have been redeemed at all. A doctrine that may appear arcane to many is in fact both biblical and essential to our salvation.

The Attraction of the Cross

Recently I came across a discussion forum online where people in my city were asked how they would like to be engaged by churches for the first time. The proposals ranged from such things as gift bags and receptions to personal time with the pastor after the service and follow-up visits. Incidentally, I had been meditating on a passage I had known theoretically from childhood but never really grasped. (There are verses in the Bible we know to be at the heart of the Christian faith, and we do well to memorize them and quote them on occasion. But I fear that we are heretofore inoculated from the sharp edge these verses have that give shape to the contours of the Christian faith and distinction from all other religions of the world). The passage to which my mind returned with was Matthew 16:24-26

How God Deals with Sins

Let us consider how God deals with any individual manifestation of sin. We take for our example twins who are brought up in the same environment. The best example would be brothers born of the same father and mother, and born at the same time. We will conceive them to be equally endowed with intelligence and health, so that outwardly they are completely equal.

How God Deals with Sins
“Among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.”  (Ephesians 2:3)

The Southern Campaign - Part Five

THEME: The Need for Obedience and Faith

This week’s lessons describe another part of the conquest of Canaan, and teach us important qualities of leadership from the life of Joshua.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:16-43

This leads to the fifth characteristic, which is that Joshua obeyed the Lord completely. This was the most striking of his characteristics. If you go back to the very beginning of the book, you’ll recognize that in the first words of God to him, this is what he was encouraged to do: “Be careful to obey all the law my servant gave you. Do not turn from it to the right or to the left so that you may be successful wherever you go. Be careful to do everything.” Later on we are told, in 11:15, "As the Lord commanded His servant, Moses, so Moses commanded Joshua. And Joshua did it. He left nothing undone of all that the Lord commanded Moses. He obeyed the Lord completely."

A Spotlight Shines on Moscow

Doug Wilson responds to Rod Dreher but fails to answer the real question...

Rod Dreher, one of today's foremost cultural commentators shone what could only have been an unwelcome light on Moscow and Doug Wilson's Christ Church.

God’s Definition of Crime

All around us we find the unsaved world with its laws and codes of conduct based on a philosophy far removed from God’s concept of sin. Human law does not hold man to be a thief until he has actually stolen something. A policeman might find a man loitering in a dark alley near the open window of a house, but the man could not be charged with robbery unless he had reached through the window and extracted some article that did not belong to him. In other words, the world says that a man is not a criminal until he has committed some crime.

God’s Definition of Crime
“The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? (Jeremiah 17:9)

The Southern Campaign - Part Four

THEME: Living the Christian Life

This week’s lessons describe another part of the conquest of Canaan, and teach us important qualities of leadership from the life of Joshua.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:16-43

The third principle of Joshua’s leadership is that he took no short-cuts. Instead he pursued his campaign with logical step-by-step progression. He was a brilliant commander, and when he saw an opportunity he seized it. That was certainly true when he marched to Gibeon and fell upon the armies early in the morning and scattered them.

In the year 325, over 200 bishops met in the city of Nicea in order to settle what was then the most pressing issue of their day: who is Jesus Christ. What was astounding about this council of Christian theologians was that just thirty years earlier many of those same Bishops were in hiding, or if found, imprisoned and tortured for their public confession that Jesus Christ is Lord. It was during that time that the Roman Empire was committed to the complete annihilation of the Christian faith.

Total and Free Access

Some years ago I was living in one of the Alpine valleys of Southern France, preaching to one of the little Huguenot congregations while I was pursuing my studies at the University of Grenoble. Every Thursday morning I walked four miles up the valley to a little centre where I taught a score of children about God. In that village there lived a Roman priest who, on Thursday, used to come down the valley to a village near the one where I lived. Frequently our paths crossed, and at times we found ourselves going the same direction.

The Southern Campaign - Part Three

THEME: Focusing on the Long-term Goal

This week’s lessons describe another part of the conquest of Canaan, and teach us important qualities of leadership from the life of Joshua.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:16-43

I think this is a good point to look back over this campaign and its details and see what it teaches us about the characteristics of strong leadership, which Joshua showed. There probably are other things that can be said about Joshua on the basis of other texts. But just looking at this one campaign, I see at least six things that are worth mentioning and trying to apply to ourselves.
