These verses from Jesus’ Sermon are about a subject that haunts us all with its relevancy: The subject of Ambition. From the oldest to the youngest, we all have some ambition. Having addressed our private life in the first half of this chapter, in verses 19-34, he abruptly changes subjects and emphasis at v. 19 to address the public overflow of one’s heart.

Christ's Triumphal Entry

Jesus’ triumphant entry into Jerusalem (Mark 11:1-11) is a  familiar story even to non–Christians. What we have come to call Palm Sunday seems to be the culmination of His earthly ministry. As believers, we rejoice to see our Lord acknowledged as the Messiah of His people. But His one moment of recognition is so painfully brief? Jesus’ identity as Saviour was veiled from the crowd at every other point of His ministry and rejected decisively by them at His death.

SCRIPTURE
Mark 11:1-11

Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples and said to them,“Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it.

Rahab Contra Mundum - Part Five

Theme: Rahab’s Salvation and Ours
This week’s lessons describe how by faith Rahab became an unexpected recipient of the grace of God.

SCRIPTURE
Joshua 2:1-24

And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there.

I started out by saying that this is a story of God’s mercy, which indeed it is. When the spies arranged to save her life, they said that she was to tie a scarlet cord in her window. That was to mark the house, such that no one would touch it when the Israelites came. It was a powerful symbol of her deliverance. Going all the way back to Clement of Rome, there has been a tradition to trace the scarlet cord through Scripture and see it pointing to the blood of Christ.  It’s called “the line of the blood,” beginning with Abel’s sacrifice of the lamb and leading to Calvary.  It is through the mark of the blood that we are saved.

Compassion and Controversy

Sometimes compassion is not polite.

I don’t like controversy even though I write things which, judging by my inbox, get me into a little hot water now and again. We are a soft generation so I understand how any willingness to confront error or rebuke one who spreads it seems to be mean-spirited, Pharisaical, or lacking in compassion. But it seems to me that the church’s new standards for compassion are shaped more by our culture than what is actually modelled in Scripture.

Please understand that I believe God’s people ought to abound in compassion.

Besides the changes in worship and church government that the Reformation brought about, there was also a marked change in church architecture. During the medieval era, the altar was placed at the center of the chancel area in most churches because of the central place the celebration of the Eucharist held in the liturgy.

The Messiah as the Stone

In quoting Psalm 118:22-23, Jesus is reminding the leaders of the scriptural greeting given to Him by the crowd at His Triumphal Entry. The Messiah, the one who would replace the evil tenants in the master’s vineyard, was, “the stone which the builders rejected”—and they were in the very act of rejecting Him. The Messiah as the Stone is set before us in two passages in Isaiah, which are then quoted in the New Testament (Isaiah 8:13-15; 28:16). This theme appears in all of the gospels and also in 1 Peter. It is understandable that Peter should have been interested in this subject—Peter means “rock,” and this was the name the Lord had given Simon.

Theme: Parables of Rejection

SCRIPTURE
Mark 12:1-12

And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country. When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

The songbirds always manage to get up before I do, so by the time I start my morning run they have already been carrying on their lyrical dialogues, mostly the robins, but the song sparrows and Carolina wrens fill in the background. Their songs seem to be so thickly spun through the morning air that it feels as if I’m running through them. Their beauty envelopes me, as it does everyone else who wakes up later in the morning. They sing before an audience.

You may be wondering what a worldview is. Or maybe not. Either way, worldviews are worth pondering. A worldview (sometimes called a "world and life view") is something we all have whether we know it or not. It is like a pair of glasses we wear to see the world around us more clearly. The point is to look through the glasses not at them. But right now we do want to look at worldviews. So we will be "beside the point" for a little while as we consider worldviews.
