No, we can't all just get along

Why churches cannot relativize marriage, human identity, and sexual ethics.

I have never seen a time when discussions and debates about homosexuality and gender identity were more ubiquitous as they are today. And with those discussions have come much confusion, error, and sin. We all know about denominations like the PC(USA), the United Methodists, Disciples of Christ, and Episcopalians who have in one way or another normalized and celebrated homosexuality.

Why We Are So Insulted

Who are these gullible women?

On Friday I kicked off a series of posts I will be doing with the heading The Danger of Women’s Ministries. I am encouraged from the responses and messages I have received over the weekend that many women resonate with this danger. And there has been some good reflection on this word “gullible,” that I honed in on from 2 Tim. 3:6.

The Path to Greatness

“Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For the Son of man also came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:43-45). This statement must have been very dear to Mark, the servant and gospel writer. It summarizes all that we have seen of Jesus’ person and mission. He wanted His disciples to understand that the ransom death He was about to die would be the climax of all He had said and done. Associating with the despised and rejected, enduring the contempt of the authorities, washing the disciples’ feet, going to the cross, dying in humiliation—this was Jesus’ path to greatness. It was for a life thus lived and a death thus died that “God has highly exalted Him” (Philippians 2:9).

SCRIPTURE
Mark 10:43-45

But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Rahab Contra Mundum - Part Four

Theme: Rahab’s Faith
This week’s lessons describe how by faith Rahab became an unexpected recipient of the grace of God.

SCRIPTURE
Joshua 2:1-24

And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there.
Thus, with all her liabilities, she did have one great thing going for her: she had heard about the true God. And when she begins to speak to the spies in the heart of the story, which is really her testimony, this is what she talks about. She says, "I know that the Lord has given this land to you and that a great fear of you has fallen on us so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you because we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed." Just hearing that was sufficient to lead her to faith in the true God.

Following Jesus 76

What is Discipleship?  The Mission of the Church involves worship, evangelism, ministry and discipleship. “… Teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” Matthew 28:20a. Discipleship is a divine commission.

What is Discipleship? It is the evidence and the disciplines that one is indeed a disciple of Jesus Christ. Discipleship is living a disciplined life to the glory and honor of God. A disciple is a follower; a pupil; one devoted to his teacher. I.e. Jesus Christ.

Pulpit and Soap Box

Dave Moore makes a wise point about evangelical reactions to gay marriage.  But the situation is perhaps a little more complicated.

Dave Moore has an excellent post on the selective outrage of evangelicals over gay marriage.  Here is the core of his argument:

By now, Obergefell v. Hodges is household parlance.  The majority opinion of the Supreme Court of the United States reads, “The Court now holds that same-sex couples may exercise the fundamental right to marry. No longer may this liberty be denied to them.”  Same-sex marriage is now a civil right.  Though not surprised when I heard the ruling on June 26th, I did have a hollow feeling.  How did we arrive at this point in history?  How did we come to have this view of the world?

When a Pastor Commits Adultery

What should repentance look like?

Pastors, like all Christians, struggle with sin. And, like all Christians, pastors need grace. But when a pastor falls to those sins which disqualify him from this role of spiritual overseer he also needs the correction and accountability of the church. He needs clear speech and direction not sentimental sweets.

In recent months several high profile pastors from various denominations have acknowledged committing adultery. I had not planned on commenting on this.

God has a Grand Plan

Larger than life itself, Paul’s God is a big God. The God of the prophets and apostles, in fact, created life. Creator and Redeemer, he becomes the awesome Benefactor of new life. Words fall short of the splendor. To say God is great is to call Niagara Falls a quaint and serene stream.

Small and stunned by God’s grace, the apostle inhales the air of grace and not surprisingly pens his letter on his face. Praise is befitting of the upright (cf. Psalm 33:1). Theology airs best from our knees.

The Danger in Women's Ministries

It's time to ask some questions about women's ministries.

Every now and then I get a disturbing email from a pastor or concerned woman about the women’s ministry in their church. The scenario is usually about a group of well-intentioned women studying a popular book that is marketed for women’s ministry groups, and it is full of bad doctrine. But the author is extremely likable, she has done many good deeds in the name of the Lord, and frankly, the women in the group are now invested. They are offended that someone is questioning what they think has been an edifying study.
