Rahab Contra Mundum - Part Three

Theme: Mercy Even to Rahab
This week’s lessons describe how by faith Rahab became an unexpected recipient of the grace of God.

SCRIPTURE
Joshua 2:1-24

And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there.
Continuing the idea from yesterday’s study, isn't it striking that in this story of judgment, the first thing is not of judgment, but of an act of mercy as God reaches out to save this pagan woman. It should direct our attention to the mercy of God, in Rahab’s case and in other cases as well. The mercy of God is particularly evident in Rahab’s case because, humanly speaking, she had nothing going for her. You have to think of her liabilities. First of all, she was a Gentile. To be a Gentile was nothing. It was to be cut off from all the spiritual benefits that God had poured upon the Jewish people in history. Rahab didn't have a Bible. Rahab didn't have the patriarchs. Rahab didn't have true worship. Rahab didn't understand any of these things spiritually. She was a Gentile.

Following Jesus 75

What is Discipleship?

What is Discipleship?

The Vision of the Church is to glorify God. I am to praise, honor, and exalt God in everything I do.

The mission for believers and the church collectively is what we are to do to demonstrate and display who we are. To summarize, our vision is to glorify God; our mission is what God commands us to do in order to fulfill the vision of glorifying God. This vision and mission of the church must be biblical, understandable, attainable, and applicable.

To glorify God is who we are.

The Request of James and John

The Bible is a book with no illusions. It does not hide human weakness in an attempt to idealize spiritual truth. And so it is that Mark goes on to show us in 10:35-45 that though the disciples followed after Jesus, they understood very little of what was happening. James and John, certainly, were not thinking of Jesus’ impending sufferings and death but about what they might get for themselves. These men had pushed away the people with children in their arms, and they had been shocked at Jesus’ teaching about giving up goods for His sake. They were amazed and afraid as He took the road to Jerusalem, and now they were filled with greed for themselves and jealousy of the others.

SCRIPTURE
Mark 10:35-45

And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you.” And he said to them, “What do you want me to do for you?” And they said to him, “Grant us to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your glory.” Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking.

This great model prayer concludes by linking divine forgiveness and human forgiveness under the rubric of prayer. Even a first-time reader can observe Jesus teaching that those who are mighty in prayer necessarily know that God’s mercy is mighty.

Rahab Contra Mundum - Part Two

Theme: Rahab and Her Encounter with the Spies
This week’s lessons describe how by faith Rahab became an unexpected recipient of the grace of God.

SCRIPTURE
Joshua 2:1-24

And Joshua the son of Nun sent two men secretly from Shittim as spies, saying, “Go, view the land, especially Jericho.” And they went and came into the house of a prostitute whose name was Rahab and lodged there.
Rahab’s story is set in the midst of a greater story, and this greater story is that of the conquest of the land. And, moreover, it’s entwined with another story which is also part of that greater story, and that is the story of the sending of the spies. Now Joshua had been commissioned, and he stood with the armies of Israel on the banks of the Jordan ready to go in. He sent two spies ahead of him, and they went to Jericho. I find it interesting that he sent two spies. I’m sure that was not accidental.  You’ll recall that 38 years before, Moses had sent twelve spies into the Promised Land.  Ten had come back with an unbelieving report that they would not be able to conquer the inhabitants.

The Call to Follow Him

When you are at the fork of the road that leads to the cross of Jesus Christ, there is no tree behind which you can hide. Luke 9:57-62 describes the people who met Jesus on the Jerusalem road and were challenged to follow Christ, but who turned aside for reasons we call “practical.” That is one way of getting out of it. You can get tied up with home duties. After all, we must be practical! Putting practicality before obedience to God’s will has destroyed many a Christian life. On this turnpike there is no exit until you come to Calvary. You start on this road and there are no U–turns and no rest stops. The traffic is going where and when He says.

Mark 10:32-34

And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid.

The Gospel-Centered Flow of Worship

Part of working out my salvation with fear and trembling is the weekly practice of remembering what it is that God has done as well as who He is. Too often I am slow of heart, but God is His great mercy graciously renews my heart week after week, month by month, and year after year in the keeping of the Lord’s Day and in the service to Him. The “otherness” of worship in its Gospel flow becomes a sanctifying gift.

"True worship, then, will be odd and perhaps even weird to the watching world…Christian worship is, in fact, a bold political act. It subverts the world’s values by assigning glory and praise to the one whom the world despises. And as weak as the church at worship might appear to the watching world, the truth is that the powers of this world are no match for the power of God who is present among his people when they gather to sing praise, pray, and hear his Word.

Jaws and Queer Theory

Nice work if you can get it.

Thanks to a lead from my favourite magazine, Private Eye, I found this conference online.  The prize for the title which packs more gibberish per inch than any other has to go to Daniel Massie (The Robert Gordon University), for ‘Jaws: The Case of the Archetypal American Villain as Queer Dissident Attacking the Heteronormative.’

A Christian worldview has its foundation upon God since God is the Creator and Sustainer of all things. Since the Bible is God’s Word, the Christian worldview is shaped by the Scriptures. The Bible explains to us God’s view of the world to which our conceptions must conform. The climax of God’s self-revelation to us comes in the person of Christ who is over all things. It is of little wonder then that Paul describes Jesus as the One “in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3).
