Forsaking All Others

When that young girl at camp asked me, “How do we decide what is worldly and what is spiritual?”, she was sitting with a young man. I believe they had just been married a year. I asked her, “How does a young bride decide how much flirtation and necking she should do with other men after she’s married?”

And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James and John, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his clothes became radiant, intensely white, as no one on earth could bleach them. And there appeared to them Elijah with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. And Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi,it is good that we are here.

A wise Puritan once said, “Providence is the Christian’s diary not his Bible.”  Let me illustrate.  Imagine the boy who is trying to decide which college to attend.  He simply can’t make up his mind and so he decides that he will go to that college which his parents or friends mention first in their next conversation because, he thinks, in that way he can discern the Lord’s will for his life.  Or think of the boy trying to decide whether or not to ask a girl to marry him.  He says to himself, “If Mary Beth calls me before 5:00 O’clock then it is a sign from the Lord that I should marry her!  What’s happening here?  These boys are treating God’s providence as if it were their Bible rather than their diary.  What they are doing is not much different from reading tea leaves or palm lines.

The Christian’s Transfiguration

Now notice the change this made in Peter, especially after Jesus’ work on earth was done and the Holy Spirit taught him the significance of all he had witnessed. Peter’s letters give ample evidence that he too was transformed, transfigured, by what he had witnessed. Paul’s call in Romans 12 is to be transformed: how can it be done? By following Jesus’ call to deny ourselves, to take up our cross daily to follow Him. Jesus has shown us by the necessity of His death that we must leave the world behind.

In Command - Part Three

Theme: God’s Specific Call
This week’s lessons describe how Joshua got to be the faithful and courageous leader for God that he was.
Secondly, Joshua received a specific call, which we find in Joshua 1. Now when we talk about a call, we have to say that there is a sense in which all of us at all times as Christians have a general call. None of us is left to do nothing. We are all called to be disciples of Jesus Christ.

Who in the church is responsible for Ministry? Ephesians 4:11-12 says, “ And he gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the shepherds and teachers, to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,” (Ephesians 4:11-12 ESV)

Ephesians 4:11-12 describes two groups of ministers. First, leaders. Among the different kinds of leaders the Apostle Paul lists include Apostles (ἀπόστολος). An apostle means a delegate, an envoy, or a messenger.

The 23rd of the Confession for the 4th of July

There is a great deal of confusion in society today about the roles of the Church and the State. What is the relationship between to the two? How does a Christian live in this current American context in a faithful and biblical way? Thankfully, chapter 23 of the Westminster Confession of Faith explains what the Scriptures teach about the nature of the relationship between the Church and the State.

The Sign of the Messiah

Let’s see what this means. Old Testament prophecy spoke often of the Messiah coming in glory. Peter said, “Yes, we all talked about the coming Messiah. In fact, that’s the reason we weren’t quite ready to accept Jesus, because He didn’t fit the blueprint of what we thought the Messiah would be.”

In Command - Part Two

Theme: From Faithful Past to Present Commissioning
This week’s lessons describe how Joshua got to be the faithful and courageous leader for God that he was.
The third thing that is impressive about the early life in the faithful past of Joshua concerns the earlier incident where Moses sent the spies into the Promised Land. There were twelve of them on that occasion. They went in, and their job was to search out the land from north to south and from east to west—from Dan to Beersheba, and from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean. They were to search out the kinds of people who lived there in the cities to bring a report. They went all through the land, and then they came back and could tell where all the tribes were and what the people were like. The twelve spies agreed on what they saw and said, "It is indeed a marvelous land flowing with milk and honey. It is exactly the way the Lord said." They even brought back some of the produce of the land.

What is Ministry? There are three words for ministry in the New Testament.

What is Ministry? There are three words for ministry in the New Testament.

First, there is the Greek word Diakonos. We derive our English word deacon from diakonos. The word may be translated servant, attendant, or a minister. It refers to a servant in relationship with his/her work.

Mark 10:45. “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life a ransom for many.”

Romans 13:4.
