Have you ever been in a discussion when someone asked, “But what is faith?”  And then there was that long pause because you were all waiting for someone to quote Hebrews 11:1, “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”  Now, whether we call what we find in this verse a definition of faith or simply a description of faith we need to say, at the very least, that it is not an exhaustive description or definition.  And yet, it is a Biblical definition or description.

Charleston and the Age to Come

We cannot talk about the events in Charleston without theological words.

So much can and should be said in response to the horrific murders that occurred in Charleston, SC at Emanuel AME Church. But one thing is for certain, the actions of the murderer cannot be adequately described in anything less that theological language. What the murderer did was evil. Yes, it was sick and criminal and revolting. But above all it was evil. It was sin. It was an affront to a holy and good God. It was an evil act committed against men and women who were gathered to pray.

Take a Step Back in Suffering

How do you glorify God in the midst of personal suffering? One of the best ways is by taking a step back and seeking to view your personal suffering in light of the glory of God.

The Westminster Shorter Catechism famously answers, "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever." This is to be the single greatest controlling influence in our lives.

The Great Commission - Part Three

Theme: Going out with the good news.
This week’s lessons teach that proclaiming the gospel is a requirement for Christians.

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 28:19

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit

LESSON

The second great universal of this text is “all nations.” It refers, as I have just anticipated, to the universal authority of Jesus over all people and thus also to the worldwide character of Christianity.

The Blindness of Unbelief

Most of all, Jesus’ true identity and mission were hidden because of the blindness of unbelief that surrounded Him. Who He was and why He was there were plain from His words and His deeds, yet it was as if everything was performed before a people deprived of every sensibility, a people with ears that heard nothing, eyes that saw nothing, hearts and minds that could not comprehend what they were told. It was not so much that He concealed Himself as it was that sin and hardness of heart kept humanity from seeing who it was who stood before them. In this way, Jesus was hidden in plain sight.

To the lover of mystery novels, part of their appeal is the challenge they present: to solve the story’s puzzle using the clues scattered throughout its pages. The solution can always be deduced from information the author has provided—train schedules, ticket stubs, furniture arrangements, missing manuscripts, clothing of a telltale color.

Following Jesus 60

I am a follower of Jesus. This means I am one of His disciples who seeks to follow His leading, and obey His biblical teachings. This results in me, by the Holy Spirit, becoming more like Him in my character. Character refers to a person’s thinking, emotions and will which evidence an integrity, strength, uprightness and a strong moral fiber of obedience to God’s Word.

We are living in a Christian sub-culture which often stresses a subjective, sentimental and emotional commitment to Jesus.

"Eschatology is the Key to Your Sanctification in the Christian Life."

Insight from G.K. Beale's lectures and sitting under the preached Word.

There has been much to say in books and blog posts about sanctification. This is a doctrine that is both important and practical for every Christian. As I’ve been listening to G.K. Beale’s lectures “Biblical Theology of the Gospels” on ITunes U, something he said in his first talk, and has been essentially expanding upon in all of them, connected once again while I sat under the preached Word last Sunday.

The Mystery of Simplicity

To the lover of mystery novels, part of their appeal is the challenge they present: to solve the story’s puzzle using the clues scattered throughout its pages. The solution can always be deduced from information the author has provided—train schedules, ticket stubs, furniture arrangements, missing manuscripts, clothing of a telltale color. But the reader must determine which clues reveal the truth, which have no bearing on the case, and which will deliberately lead to the wrong conclusion. The answers are there, but they are mixed in with falsehoods and irrelevancies, “hidden in plain sight.”

SCRIPTURE
Mark 7:31-37

Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue.

The Great Commission - Part Two

Theme: Going out with the good news.
This week’s lessons teach that proclaiming the gospel is a requirement for Christians.

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 28:18

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

LESSON

Jesus begins with his authority: “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.” This is no weak authority, because the one who spoke it is no weak master. He is the risen Lord, and “all authority in heaven and on earth" has been given to him.

Following Jesus 59

In Exodus 20:1-7, God gives us a list of Ten Commandments addressing a variety of issues pertaining to our relationship with God and one another. Disobedience to each resulted in the death penalty in ancient Israel, with the exception of coveting. Each one is restated in the New Testament, with the exception of the Sabbath Day for worship. The issues include:
