Following Jesus 48

As we examine the Twelve Disciples of Jesus, we now examine the third group of four. Following James the Less and Judas Labbaeus Thaddaeus, we continue with the disciple known as Simon the Zealot. What do we know about this follower of Jesus?

Simon the Zealot is first mentioned in Matthew 10:4 as Simon the Canaanite. The title comes from the Hebrew word qanna meaning “to be jealous or zealous. It was a title given to those who were zealous for the Law of God.

In Luke 6:15, Simon is called Zelotes.

The Burial of Jesus Christ - Part One

Theme: Life from death.
This week’s lessons show us that God is greater than the grave.

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 27:57-66

The burial of Jesus is the second of the core doctrines of Christianity listed by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 15: “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve” (vv. 3-5). It occupies a significant amount of space in each of the four gospels: ten verses in Matthew, six verses in Mark, six in Luke, and five in John. But we do not generally think about Jesus’ burial very much.

True God and True Man

When we look at the Lord Jesus, what exactly is it that we see? “True God and true man” is the answer given by the ancient church, and hundreds of pages have been written to explain exactly what that means. Certainly we cannot answer the question definitively in the course of this study; nor was that Mark’s chief purpose in writing his gospel. But in the next few chapters, mark does provide us with many incidents that offer glimpses into Jesus’ unique nature. He shows us the way Jesus, like no other man, was able to bring the earthly and the spiritual together.

SCRIPTURE
Mark 4 35-41

On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. And other boats were with him. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.

Pastoral Perspectives on Baptism

Theolgy matters. Disagreements exist within the Reformed confessional tradition, and we know that debates can often descend into name-calling and straw man arguments. This booklet contains two brief summaries - one by a pastor of paedo-baptist persuasion, one by a Baptist pastor - on a subject that matters.

‘New Perspective’ has become something of a red flag in many Christian circles because of its associations with the so-called ‘New Perspective on Paul’. But if we allow one dubious doctrine linked to contaminate a phrase – however bad the guilt by association may be – we end up consigning a perfectly good expression to the garbage heap for no good reason. So, as we continue our mini-study of saving faith as it is examined in Psalm 73, let me make the argument that the essence of genuine faith is the fact it gives an altogether ‘new’ perspective on everything for those who exercise it. Or, to refer to the section from the Westminster Confession’s chapter on ‘Saving Faith’ cited in my previous post, faith that is genuine always ‘gets the victory’. But how does this come out in what the psalmist says in this important psalm?

The "Again" of Freedom in Christ

The focused worship of Jesus, our second Adam, is the antidote to creeping legalism. As we are more captivated by Him, we are less the captive by our own self-righteousness. With every again of self-righteousness we have the great joy of returning again to Christ.

The luxury of the unexamined life is never the luxury of the Christian. Self-examination and a preaching of the Gospel to your own heart is the duty of every Christian--always. The times during which Christians find themselves in most trouble are the times when they think that they have arrived at a new plateau of spiritual maturity--where self-examination is no longer necessary (or at least is not viewed as something as necessary as it had been in times past). These are dangerous moments for Christians.

Here are some facts Judas Lebbaeus Thaddaeus. To begin with, he is first mentioned in Matthew 10:3. He is also mentioned in Luke 6:16 and Acts 1:13 where he is called Judas the son of James.

In John 14:21 he is called Judas (not Iscariot). His full name may have been Judas Lebbaeus Thaddaeus.

The Death of Jesus Christ - Part Five

Theme: The miracles of Calvary.
This week’s lesson shows us proof that Jesus was the Son of God.

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 27:52-56

Later on Jesus told his disciples, “Because I live, you also will live” (John 14:19). Still later, Paul wrote to the Corinthians, “Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since death came through a man, the resurrection of the dead comes also through a man. For as in Adam all die, so in Christ all will be made alive. But each in his own turn: Christ, the firstfruits; then, when he comes, those who belong to him” (1 Corinthians 15:20-23).

Jesus’ Obedience to the Father - Part Three

The religionists saw Jesus through eyes that had never submitted to God the Father, so they did not see that Christ’s mission was an expression of the Father’s will, and that in Him they could find the fellowship with the Father that they had vainly sought for so long.

Theme: Rumblings of Opposition

SCRIPTURE
Mark 3:31-35

And his mother and his brothers came, and standing outside they sent to him and called him. And a crowd was sitting around him, and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are outside, seeking you.”And he answered them, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking about at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers!

The Seeds of Union with Christ

From whence does Paul’s understanding of a believer’s union in Christ come? Much recent work has shed some light upon this question and many have pointed to Paul’s actual encounter with Christ when on the Damascus Road. And indeed it seems that it was in his Damascus road experience where the deep seeds of a theology of union were planted.
