Southern Baptists and the Sufficiency of Scripture

Southern Baptists pull Heavenly Tourism books. But has that solved the problem at Lifeway?

Lifeway, a publishing arm of the nation’s largest Protestant denomination will no longer be promoting and selling Heaven tourism books. This is good news. If you are unfamiliar with the term, Heaven tourism refers to books like 90 Minutes in Heaven and Heaven is for Real in which the authors claim to have died and visited Heaven only to be returned to earth. The defenders of the immensely popular books claim that they help bolster their belief in Heaven.

The Disciples of Christ: Still Crazy After All These Years

And all Indiana breathed a sigh of relief...

Desperately seeking relevance, the habitually dwindling Disciples of Christ denomination announced that Indiana, having had the audacity to pass a version of the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act, will not be host to their annual denominational convention. Once again the Disciples of Christ have put on public display what happens when a once Christian organization untethers itself from biblical authority.

Commenting on this most recent act of self-destruction from the DoC, Mark Tooley writes:

Constructive Criticism at Work

Is it just me, or has the whole idea of good critique and constructive criticism these days been snubbed like the awkward, knobby-kneed boy asking for a tweenage diva's number?

Is it just me, or has the whole idea of good critique and constructive criticism these days been snubbed like the awkward, knobby-kneed boy asking for a tweenage diva’s number? It seems that as a society, and even in the evangelical world, all questions, differing opinions, and critique are taken as personal attacks.

Every Pastor Needs a Theology Coach

Denying the role of theological coaches in your life is to deny the very structure of the church God has created. He gave us teachers and preachers for the equipping of the church. And pastors need equipping as well. Yes, Scripture alone is our authority, and it alone tells us what we need to know about the Lord. But we need help understanding all that God has revealed in Scripture. Does any pastor think he has somehow attained a kind of theological perfection? God help him.

Every pastor needs “coaching.” Though they have gone by different names over the years (mentors, teachers, etc.) the ideas of mature men helping others mature in leadership has always been around. Pastors need seasoned leaders that can speak into their lives to help them think and work through pastoral ministry. After entering the pastorate most of us quickly learn—there is a lot to learn.

Jones, Levy and the Emerging Feminist Consensus

Mark Jones and Paul Levy: Champions of Feminism?

Over at ref21 the other week, Jonesy and Levy upset the Big Eva establishment by decrying the strange American habit of clapping after Christian conference addresses.  Well, it seems that these two estimable champions of stadium modesty are also in the vanguard of contemporary feminism.

Given the Alliance’s clear emphasis on the subject (coupled with evangelicalism’s increasing murkiness), I can think of no better theme for my first post than this: “All Scripture is breathed out by God” (2 Timothy 3:16). Two texts are particularly helpful for understanding what Paul means by this.

The first is Romans 9:17, “For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, ‘For this very purpose I have raised you up.’” When we turn to Exodus 9:16, we discover that it was actually God who spoke these words to Pharaoh. So why does Paul affirm that the Scripture said it, when—in actual fact—God said it? The answer: “All Scripture is breathed out by God.”

I’m very thankful for the opportunity to contribute a column at Place for Truth, and I pray the Lord will use my contributions for the furthering of His kingdom.

The Westminster Confession states unequivocally that the whole counsel of God is found in the Holy Scriptures either by direct reference or by “good and necessary consequence”. The Scripture has been handed down to us from the inspired apostles and prophets through various agencies of God (editors, copyists, translators, archeologists, etc.) We have been blessed to have extant manuscripts going back hundreds even thousands of years that corroborate the Scriptures we have in our hands today (recognizing some translations are better than others).

The whole counsel of God, concerning all things necessary for His own glory, man's salvation, faith and life, is either expressly set down in Scripture, or by good and necessary consequence may be deduced from Scripture: unto which nothing at any time is to be added, whether by new revelations of the Spirit, or traditions of men. My ten favorite books on pastoral ministry

Sharpening your skills as a pastor...

I read the following three books by Eugene Peterson while I was a young youth pastor. They were extremely helpful in challenging many of the assumptions I had learned in a mega-church culture.
