A Word to Famous Pastors

A few things to think about if you are a famous pastor...

The church is both blessed and cursed by its well-known pastors. Some like T.D. Jakes and Joyce Meyer and Brian McLaren have distorted the gospel and done great damage to the church. Others however have blessed the church by contending faithfully for the truth and advancing the gospel of Jesus. Some famous pastors have had an important ministry of equipping other pastors well. It is to this group of faithful men that I write these words.

Offenses and Offenders

It is good and necessary for us to have adversaries?

I came across this excerpt from Martin Luther’s Tabletalk today. It is under the chapter heading “Offences”:
We little know how good and necessary it is for us to have adversaries, and for heretics to hold up their heads against us. For if Cerinthus had not been, then St. John the Evangelist had not written his gospel; but when Cerinthus opposed the godhead in our Lord Christ, John was constrained to write and say: In the beginning was the Word; making the distinction of the three persons so clear, that nothing could be clearer.

Reports of the Collapse Have Perhaps Been Exaggerated -- But Only Temporarily

The coming evangelical shift on gay marriage and sexual identity.

The other evening over dinner, a young Roman Catholic friend asked me if I thought evangelicalism would hold firm on gay marriage.  I told him I thought a major collapse in the consensus was imminent and also speculated that he would see a similar thing occurring among un-catechized Roman Catholics.  Well, now, a report in Time alleges a significant shift among younger evangelicals towards favouring gay marriage.  Like all statistics, these can be debated.  Further, the terms of the question are co

"Top Down" or "Grassroots" Ministry?

Broader churches often tend to focus on "every member ministry"--while minimizing the need for robust pastoral ministry--while more stringently Reformed churches tend to focus on the primacy of pastoral ministry--to the minimizing of vibrant congregational life and ministry. Both approaches often appear to be overreactions to perceived deficiencies or abuses in the outworking of the opposite approach. The question with which we are faced is this: "Should ministry in the local church be done from the 'top down" or should it be "grassroots?'"

In the early years of my seminary experience, I quickly began to realize that within the Calvinistic and Reformed Church at large there was something of a divide over whose role it was to carry out ministry in the local church.

The System of Dr Tarr and Professor Fether

Oh my.

Todd brought this little gem to my attention yesterday: Mount Holyoke College has apparently canceled a performance of that pinnacle of Western literary achievement, 'The Vagina Monologues,' because it might be offensive to transgender women who do not have the relevant anatomical part.

The last act is bloody. Always bloody.

Malarkeygate is emblematic of an entire culture.

Last week’s Malarkey business was sad.  Though the lad involved clearly did wrong, it did not seem to me that he had been motivated by greed, simply by a desire for attention.  That does not sanctify the sin but it certainly puts it in perspective relative to other, more high-profile cases of dishonest marketing, such as plagiarism and the use of ghost writers.

Because it is Disturbing

Reflection on a disturbing trend and a disturbing people.

I read an article over the weekend on the Aquila Report that disturbed me. The article warned of a disturbing trend that we will see in our churches in 2015:
“What is this one trend? It's that your most committed people will attend worship services less frequently than ever in 2015. [Emphasis added.]
“What does this mean? Simply that people who use[d] to attend 4 times a month may only attend 3 times a month.

Round and About

A few interesting things from around the interweb...

No surprises HERE. What is sad is that the market for heavenly tourism books will remain high.

On a related note, perhaps Lifeway will begin to seriously examine and reconsider the sorts of books they sell.
