We kind of just do it for fun

Not just a movement -- a podcast!

As the Ref Pack told Slate Magazine this week, we "kind of do the podcast for fun." That's even the case now, despite doing it under the distinctly unfunny iron fist of the Mad Woman in the Attic.  As one might say: yes, we are a movement; yes, we are a revival (what doe

Our Greatest Journey

The Bible provides many indicators to help us discover where we are in relation to God. One such clue is in 1 John 3:14 where the Apostle John uses the image of traveling from one destination (death) to another (life), and says, "If you've made that journey, you'll see signs of love for other Christians in your life.” Let’s take a closer look at that death-to-life journey and the clues that tell us we’ve taken it.

Have you ever woken up in an unfamiliar bed and wondered, "Where am I?"

You probably then looked around for some clues until you gradually realized from your surroundings where you were.

Have you ever woken up and wondered, “Where am I spiritually?”

If so, you probably also want to thoughtfully and prayerfully look for pointers and clues as to your spiritual state. Thankfully the Bible provides many such indicators to help us discover where we are in relation to God. One such clue is in 1 John 3:14.

A Guest Review: McKnight on Brenneman

A pungent review of a new book on evangelical sentimentalism.

Earlier this year, Scot McKnight kindly invited me to review Theo Hobson's Reinventing Liberal Christianity for his blog.  In return, I asked him to review Todd Brenneman's new book, Homespun Gospel.  Being myself broadly sympathetic to Brenneman's thesis, I knew that Scot would offer a tough-minded counter view that would challenge me to think me about my own position.  He has not disappointed but has provided a most thoughtul and substantial review.

Twas Just Days Before Christmas...

...and in the bunker underground...

Twas just days before Christmas and in the bunker underground
The spin was still spinning, but the Ref Pack could not be found.
Extra paper clips and gum held their stockings with care
With hopes that the Puppet Master soon would visit there.
The cohosts were doing some last minute shopping
Taking a break from their work but the spin wasn’t stopping.
They thought about all they had mortified this year
It was a bit overwhelming so they stopped for a beer.
Patriarchy, plagiarism, baptism, and Big Eva

Is Heaven Not Good Enough For You?

"The the kingdom of heaven will be like..."

Now there is a leveling question. It is asked by Thomas Shepard in The Parable of the Ten Virgins. The question is part of his sermon notes on the visible church of God. Shepard opens with the point that the church is the very place that God prepares his bride to meet Christ, and that it is not the kingdom of this world, but rather the very kingdom of heaven.

Identity Confusion

A case of confusion at Wheaton?

World magazine has an article this week on the appointment of a celibate gay counselor at Wheaton College.

And just because we can....

A little encouragement for the weary pastor.

By popular demand, we reprint here the picture of Paul Levy's wedding, as referred to in this week's podcast. We trust it will be a source of comfort and hope for you. Sadly, 'The Encouraging Tour of Paul Levy's Library' video appears to have been pulled from the web.  The Top Men even have friends in high places at Youtube, it seems.

The Mad Woman Builds Our Brand

We are not worthy. No, really, we aren't.

In honour of the fact that there is no way, no way at all, that Reformed evangelicalism has been remotely corrupted by celebrity culture, Top Men, 'great leaders,' or self-promotion, the Mad Woman in the Attic has not only designed and promoted that series of humble, gospel centred 'Homeboy' mugs but has this week used the podcast to launch Del Thomas's rock career.  Indeed, we are pleased to announce that De

Oden and Optimism about the Mainline

Thomas Oden seems optimistic about the hopes for orthodoxy in mainline churches. But perhaps he is underestimating the challenges.

A significant part of Thomas Oden's autobiography is taken up with his account of his life in the mainline United Methodist Church and how this was affected by his repudiation of his early liberalism and his discovery of a creedal orthodoxy rooted in the patristic authors.  He seems on the whole positive about the future but I suspect such optimism is not well-placed.

The Heart-Cry of the Christian

Every Christian heart cries, "Give me more of Christ." We long to see Him. David said, "One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after, that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord" (Psalm 27:4). When Peter sees the glory of the Lord on the Mount of Transfiguration, he believes he has arrived. There is nothing left on his "bucket list;" he is ready to camp out and stay for all eternity. The saint longs to see the glory of Christ. And the greater the longing, the more mature the saint. He knows that there is nothing better.
