Help and Hinderance

The Christian life is presented to us in the Scriptures as a great warfare in which we are partakers. We have a great enemy, but we also have a great Ally. There is one, near at all times, who is the great hinderer and there is one, also near at all times, who is the great Helper.

Your Soul is Showing

Girls are accustomed to being told that their slip is showing, if such is the case. One who is told too often may be considered a careless dresser. Worse than letting a slip show, though, is letting one's soul show. I quote from a letter which said, "There are some awful souls talking in Christian speech." Awful souls? I began to think about it. I knew what was meant, of course, but there was something here that needed clarification.

Mourning for the Good Shepherd - Part Five

Zechariah 12:1-14
Theme: End times.
This week’s lessons remind us that today is the day of salvation.

Lesson
Perception of these truths will come about by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, for it is only as God pours out "a spirit of grace and supplication" that the repentance and turning depicted here occur.

Perception of these truths will come about by the power of God’s Holy Spirit, for it is only as God pours out "a spirit of grace and supplication" that the repentance and turning depicted here occur. It is only by the power of God’s Holy Spirit that they occur anywhere or to anyone. But where the Holy Spirit is present, this is what happens: first, a mourning for personal and national sin, and, second, a turning from that sin to look in faith to the Lord Jesus.

Sincerity

Words are more interesting than any puzzle. Sometimes the history of a word opens up a window on the habits and customs of a past generation. The common English word "butcher," for example, takes us back through the French "boucher," when "bouc" or goat meat was the chief meat on the diet.

Mourning for the Good Shepherd - Part Four

Zechariah 12:1-14
Theme: End times.
This week’s lessons remind us that today is the day of salvation.

Lesson

The judgment against the nations will be an accelerating one to judge from the increasing intensity of the verbs used in this section: "reeling" (v. 2), "injure" (v. 3), "destroy" (v. 9). This battle, in which God intervenes at the crucial moment on behalf of his people, will be the greatest victory the nation of Israel has ever achieved - greater than its conquests in the day of King David, greater than the deliverance of the Maccabees, greater than the conquests of the Six Day War or any other. But just at the time of this, their greatest victory, God intervenes in another way to achieve his final conquest over them.

The Simple Promises of God

Whenever I’m leading the first few meetings of a small group or discussion group. I like to say, “You all can talk or I can talk. I prefer that you talk but I have no problem filling space with words, after all, I’m a pastor.” We all laugh and after a few people take me up on my challenge, the discussion typically is off and running with little input from this loquacious pastor.

Mourning for the Good Shepherd - Part Three

Zechariah 12:1-14
Theme: End times.
This week’s lessons remind us that today is the day of salvation.

Lesson

The second part of the statement tells what God is going to do. He is going to make "Jerusalem a cup that sends all the surrounding nations reeling" (v. 2). Jerusalem and the surrounding area of Judah will be besieged; this will be the time of Jacob's trouble. But out of that will come the judgment on the Gentile nations that the next verses describe. The cup is the cup of God's wrath or judgment (cf. Is. 51:17; Jer. 25:15-28, 49:12; Ezek. 23:31-34; Rev. 14:9-10, 16:19).

Feelings and Feelings

There are certain words in the Scriptures which are used in opposite senses. The classic example is that of "works," which God curses and blesses. "Not of works lest any man should boast," is followed by ‘`we are created in Christ Jesus unto good works" (Eph. 2:9, 10). Works upon which we are dependent for salvation must ever be cursed of God, but works which flower from the new creation of life in Christ Jesus, are not only blessed of God, but are also a part of the purpose of our new creation.

8 Baby Steps To Christian Courage

Christian leaders face many difficult, daunting, demanding, and, sometimes, dangerous situations – both outside the church and inside the church. That’s why the military model of leadership is used so commonly in Scripture. And yet the vast majority of us are cowards. We avoid danger. We walk away from conflict. We prefer comfort and ease to sacrifice and pain. Christians especially may have a tendency towards timidity rather than bravery. Fear comes more naturally than faith.
