Philip Ryken is an Alliance Council member, and has served as the Bible teacher for
Every Last Word since 2004. Dr. Ryken was appointed to the presidency of Wheaton
College in 2010. Previously, he served as senior minister of Philadelphia's historic Tenth
Presbyterian Church, where he had preached since 1995.
A Wheaton native and the son of longtime Wheaton professor Dr. Leland Ryken and
Mary Graham Ryken, Dr. Ryken graduated from the College in 1988 with a bachelor's
degree in English literature and philosophy. He met his wife, Lisa, during new student
orientation, and they were married before their senior year.
After graduating from, the Rykens moved to Philadelphia, where Dr. Ryken continued
his studies at Westminster Theological Seminary. He earned his master of divinity
degree while working as a youth director at Trinity Orthodox Presbyterian Church in
Hatboro, Pennsylvania. The Rykens moved to England in 1992, where, in addition to
earning a doctorate in historical theology from Oxford University, Dr. Ryken helped
plant a Presbyterian church, played forward on a basketball team that won the British
university championship, studied preaching with Rev. Dick Lucas in London, and served
a short internship (arranged by Charles Colson and Carl F. H. Henry) with Mr. William
Still in Scotland.
In 1995, Dr. Ryken joined the staff of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia as an
associate minister, serving under the leadership of Dr. James Boice. After Dr. Boice's
death in 2000, Dr. Ryken became the church's senior minister, at 33 years of age.
Speaking and teaching around the world, he has lectured at Chongshin University in
Seoul, Istanbul Theological Seminary, Regent College in Vancouver, and Westminster
Theological Seminary in Philadelphia. He has spoken at theology conferences across
the United States and in Canada, China, Northern Ireland, Singapore, South Africa,
South Korea, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, Turkey, and Ukraine.
Dr. Ryken has authored or edited more than 30 books, including Ecclesiastes: Why
Everything Matters (Crossway, 2010); Luke, a two-volume Reformed Expository
Commentary (P&R, 2009); The ESV Literary Study Bible, with Leland Ryken
(Crossway, 2007); What is the Christian Worldview? (P&R, 2006); Art for God's
Sake: A Call to Recover the Arts (P&R, 2006); Ryken's Bible Handbook, with Leland
Ryken and Jim Wilhoit (Tyndale, 2005); City on a Hill: Recovering the Biblical Pattern
for the Church in the 21st Century (Moody Press, 2003); The Message of Salvation
(InterVarsity, 2001); and expository commentaries on Exodus, Jeremiah, Galatians, 1
Timothy and other books of the Bible.
The Rykens have five children: Josh, Kirsten, Jack, Kathryn, and Karoline. When he
is not preaching or playing with his family, Dr. Ryken likes to read great books, shoot
baskets, and ponder the relationship between the Christian faith and American culture.
