Following Jesus 131

Following Jesus: The Progress of the Pilgrim.

What is the other response to God’s wisdom?

The second people group which responds to God’s wisdom are known by many names: the redeemed; the justified; the saved; Christians; believers. We will call them followers of Jesus. Their response to the cross is revealed in I Corinthians 18b and vs. 24-25.

To begin with, God’s wisdom reflects the Power of God. “But to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” Vs. 18b. To those individuals who God saves, the word of the cross demonstrates the supernatural power of God. It is a power which belongs to God and comes from God.

This idea is also found in vs. 24. “But to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God.” Vs. 24a. To those individuals who God invites into a covenant relationship with Him, whether they are religious or pagan, their conversion and the relief from their great and heavy burden evidences the power of God and the wisdom or knowledge of God. This means that the word of the cross is the only answer to fallen man’s plight.

In addressing the perspective the fallen world has that God’s wisdom is foolishness, Paul says “For the foolishness of God is wiser than men,” vs. 25a. That which the world says is utter foolishness from God is wiser than the wisest human being.

God’s wisdom is stronger than the wisdom of man. “And the weakness of God is stronger than men.” Vs. 25b. Correspondingly, the world believes God to be weak. However, God’s weakness is stronger that the strongest man.

What are the consequences or effects God’s wisdom has on man’s sin and man’s need for God’s salvation from this great and heavy burden of sin?
