Following Jesus 23

Are you like John?

John speaks quite eloquently about the love of God. His treatment of this attribute of God is far reaching and a characteristic that each believer must imitate.

John states that God the Father loves Christ’s disciples (John 16:25-28; 17:20-23). He also indicates that God loves all types of men and mankind (John 3:16; I John 3:1).

John also shares that God the Son loves God the Father (John 14:31; 17:22-23). He also writes that Christ loves all of His disciples in general and disciples in particular (John 13:1-34; John 14:21; John 11:1-5; 36-37; John 15:9).

John continues this predominant theme of the love of God by writing that Christ expects men to love Him (John 8:42; 14:22-24), and to love one another (John 13:34-35; 15:12-13; I John 4:7-11).

Finally, John explains that the love of God is the fulfillment of the whole law (John 15:10; I John 3:23-24).

What then can the follower of Jesus take from these statements of truth in order to apply them within his/her own life?

To begin with, the follower of Jesus, much like John, is to be an individual passionately devoted to biblical truth. What biblical truths is John committed to? These would be the following:

The person of Christ (John 1:14 -18; John 5:30-35; John 14:5-7; I John 2:18-25), worship ( John 4:23-24), what it means to be a true follower of Jesus (John 8:31-38; John 8:39-47; John 19:35-37; I John 1:5-10; I John 2:3-6; I John 3:19-24; I John 4:6; 2 John 1-4; 3 John 1; 3 John 3-4; 3 John 12), the Holy Spirit (John 14:17; 15:26-27; John 16:7-13; I John 5:6; 3 John 8), and God’s Word (John 17:8; John 18:37-38).

Let us take to heart what our brother John the Apostle has to say about being a follower of Jesus. Soli deo Gloria!
