Following Jesus 56

How are people today like Judas Iscariot? Especially people who claim to be followers of Jesus? I draw your attention to one of the most fearful texts of Scripture: Matthew 7:21-23. The text reads:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’(Matthew 7:21-23 ESV)

People like Judas Iscariot are people pretending to be a followers of Jesus, but truly are not. Vs. 21.

People like Judas Iscariot claim godly works, but lack godly character. Vs. 22-23.

What they will say. On that day many will say to me, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’ vs. 22.

On the day refers to the court of justice. A great number who have come to face Jesus Christ the judge we give their litany of why they should be allowed in heaven. The list is impressive. It involves such dramatic works like prophesy, exorcisms, and many might works. Why wouldn’t Jesus allow them into heaven?

Jesus reply is straight forward and resoundingly brief. “And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’ Vs. 23.

What is necessary to possess eternal life is to be in covenant relationship with Jesus Christ. Otherwise, Jesus will declare you to depart from His presence. Why? This is due to the fact that inwardly, these individuals are workers of lawlessness.
