Precious Blood 3 - R.C. Sproul

The Bible speaks about our redemption in terms of a purchase.  The Apostle Paul said to his people, you are not your own.  What does that mean?  You are not your own.  You might say, “Of course, I'm my own.  Who else's am I?  I'm free.  I don't belong to anybody else.”  Paul said, “Oh, yes, you do.  You are not your own because you've been bought.  You've been purchased.  You have been bought and you have been paid for, and the price that was paid was the blood of Jesus.”

Now, dear friends, how much are you worth?  You know, our credits ask us that all the time.  What is your net worth?  How valuable are you?  What was Jesus getting at when He said to those who were around Him, "What does it profit a man when he gains the whole world..."   da, dah, da, dah...  "but loses his own soul?"  When Jesus weighed that economic transition, He obviously meant that the whole world cannot compare in value to the value of your soul.

He went on to say, "What would a man give in exchange for his soul?"  We also hear cynically every man has his price.  What's yours?  How much would you take in exchange for your soul?  But at no time in history has a premium been put on the value of your soul than when Jesus paid for your soul, the purchase of His own blood.

We can consider how much the blood of Christ is worth to us.  It's worth our salvation.  It's worth eternity for us.  But another question I want to consider here is:  How valuable was the blood of Jesus to God the Father?  How much worth did the Father place on His Son?  Three times in the New Testament we have a record of God speaking audibly from Heaven. The only time He speaks audibly from Heaven, the message is basically the same.  He is pointing to Jesus and He says, "This is my beloved Son."  He could have said, "This is my precious son.  This is my valued son.  This is my beloved Son, my cherished son, in whom I am well pleased."  Or elsewhere He said, "This is my beloved Son.  Listen to Him."

What is God saying?  How could any human being not value the words of Jesus?  What human being could lightly dismiss the Word of God upon whom God puts the supreme value and calls Him precious.
