Following Jesus 103

Following Jesus: What kind of church are we?

What happens to a person or a church which continues to compromise? What happens to a person or a church when they continue to expose themselves to evil, danger and non-truth? In a word, they become corrupt.

Corruption is being consistently ungodly and unrighteous. It is the inevitable result of compromise. When a church opens itself to danger, and fails to recognize and repent of it, then it will become dominated by such compromise. It will become corrupt. It may be influenced by only a handful of corrupt individuals, or perhaps just one.

Corruption is moral perversion, immorality, depravity, dishonesty, etc. It is a downward spiral into sin and its inevitable consequences. It is the result of a life resistant to God’s Word and God’s will.

The corrupt church is known for its dishonesty, fraud, depravity, perversion, immorality, degeneracy and vice toward and against God. It is an individual, or a church, distorting biblical truth it finds offensive and tolerating and embracing false teaching it finds attractive.

What eventually happens to a church continuing in compromise resulting in corruption? It will soon become a dead church.

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write: ‘The words of him who has the seven spirits of God and the seven stars.

“‘I know your works. You have the reputation of being alive, but you are dead. Wake up, and strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have not found your works complete in the sight of my God. Remember, then, what you received and heard. Keep it, and repent. If you will not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come against you. Yet you have still a few names in Sardis, people who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, for they are worthy. The one who conquers will be clothed thus in white garments, and I will never blot his name out of the book of life. I will confess his name before my Father and before his angels. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’ (Revelation 3:1-6 ESV)
