Following Jesus 59

In Exodus 20:1-7, God gives us a list of Ten Commandments addressing a variety of issues pertaining to our relationship with God and one another. Disobedience to each resulted in the death penalty in ancient Israel, with the exception of coveting. Each one is restated in the New Testament, with the exception of the Sabbath Day for worship. The issues include:

  1. A command to worship God alone and no other gods (Exodus 20:3; Exodus 22:20; Deuteronomy 6:13-15; Acts 14:15).
  2. A command to not make or have any idols (Exodus 20:4; Deuteronomy 27:15; I John 5:21).
  3. A command to not swear and use God’s name in a profane or wicked way (Exodus 20:7; Leviticus 24:15-16; James 5:12).
  4. A command to remember the Sabbath Day as a day to worship God (Exodus 20:8; Numbers 15:32-36; Acts 20:7-12; I Corinthians 16:1-2; Colossians 2:16-17; Revelation 1:10).
  5. A command to honor and obey one’s parents (Exodus 20:12; Exodus 21:15-17; Ephesians 6:1-4; Colossians 3:20-21).
  6. A command to not commit premeditated murder (Exodus 20:13; Exodus 21:12; Matthew 5:21-26; I John 3:1-5).
  7. A command to not commit sexual immorality or adultery (Exodus 20:14; Leviticus 20:10; Matthew 5:27-30; I Corinthians 6:9-10; I Thessalonians 4:1-8).
  8. A command to not steal (Exodus 20:15; Exodus 21:16; Ephesians 4:28).
  9. A command to not lie (Exodus 20:16; Deuteronomy 18:16-21; Colossians 3:9-10).
  10. A command to not covet (Exodus 20:17; 2 Samuel 11-12; Ephesians 5:1-3).
Jesus said the greatest commandment, the commandment which summarizes all the hundreds of commandments found in the Scriptures, is to love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind (Matthew 22:34-40; Mark 12:28-34). The second commandment is to love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:39).

This love for God, and love for one’s neighbor, is revealed as followers of Jesus obey the commandments of Jesus. This is the objective truth Jesus taught His followers. May we, as His followers who claim to love Him, be obedient to the commandments of the One we claim to follow.

Soli deo Gloria!
