Killing your Sin 3

As the Apostle Paul explains further, the sins the Christian must kill within their life were sins in which when unconverted they used to fulfill. We used to belong to them and used to live in them. However, since conversion to Christ we must put them all away. We must kill them.

Paul expands his list. To include:

  • Anger. Ὀργή; fury.
  • Wrath. Θυμός; intense anger with associated outbursts.
  • Malice. Κακία; hateful feeling; hostility; strong dislike.
  • Slander. Βλασφημία; to speak about someone in order to ruin their reputation.
  • And obscene talk. Αἰσχρολογία; dirty speech. Vulgar speech disapproved not only by God but also by the culture.
  • Do not lie to one another. Ψεύδομαι;

We are to do this because we have within the entire framework of life. put off the old self with its practices. The old self refers to the human nature which is old, and inferior.

Believers have not only put off the old self but have also put on the new self. The phrase “put off and put on” carries with it the idea of the removal or placing upon oneself an article of clothing. The image represents the old and new nature.

Our new nature in Christ is a desire to glorify God which is continually renewed in the knowledge of God. There is no distinction in this renewal. All Christians, wherever they live, have this new nature from Christ.

Therefore, Christians are to kill their sin because God commands it to be done.

Secondly, Christians are to kill their sin because there are consequences when fail, to do it. They may be temporal (Proverbs 7; Galatians 6:6-10) or eternal (Romans 8:12-17; Galatians 5:16-23).

Finally, holiness is the ultimate purpose for it (I Peter 1:13-16; 2 Corinthians 7:1; I Thessalonians 4:1-8; Hebrews 12:14).

In light of these truths, what sin(s) do you need to daily kill? If you are not sure, ask someone who you trust what sin(s) they witness in your life?

Are you willing to commit to pray with and become mutually accountable to an individual who will, with God’s strength, help you continually kill your sin? Men with men and women with women. A husband with his wife; a wife with her husband.

Do you understand that even the strongest believer who God assuredly freed from the condemning power of sin ought to make their business all their days to kill the indwelling power of sin?
