Matthew was a tax collector for the Empire of Rome. Therefore, he was identified as a traitor to Israel and to his countrymen. As a tax collector, he most likely was a thief, involved in extortion and/or an outcast. He would be viewed as a first class traitor who worked for the oppressor.

Are you like Nathanael? Let’s look at some biblical facts about Nathanael.

To begin with, Nathaniel’s full name was Nathanael Bartholomew. His name means “gift of God.” Nathanael was from Cana of Galilee (John 21:1-2). Phillip brought Nathanael to Jesus (John 1:45-51).

His name means “lover of horses.” He is not to be confused with Phillip the deacon (Acts 6 & 8). Phillip is a Greek name but Phillip was Jewish. Why his parents gave him this name we do not know. When Greeks wanted to see Jesus, they approached Phillip (John 12:20-22).
