International Council on Biblical Inerrancy

What is ICBI?

ICBI, the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy, is a coalition of individuals who represent many works and denominations but who are together taking a united stand on God's Inerrant Word.

What is ICBI's Purpose?

Our purpose is to take a united stand in elucidating, vindicating, and applying the truth of biblical inerrancy as an integral element in the authority of Scripture.  This will be done in both academic theology and practical Christian instruction.

Why Is ICBI Necessary?

The authority and accuracy of the Bible are foundations of the Christian faith.  Yet we are witnessing the erosion of these foundations.  As we have observed the preaching in many local churches, the teaching in some seminaries and much popular Christian literature, we sense that sizeable numbers of evangelical believers are being turned away from the Bible as their final authority in matters of Christian doctrine and Christian living.

How Was ICBI Started?

God laid the burden of this issue on the hearts of several people simultaneously.  In February 1977, a group met before and during a Reformation Study Center apologetics conference at Mt. Hermon, CA, for prayer, discussion and planning of this Scripture issue.  Many possibilities and ideas were discussed which later became the foundation upon which the Council and Advisory Board worked, refining them into their present form. J. I. Packer, John Gerstner, R.C. Sproul, Norman Geisler, Greg Bahnsen, Wetherell Johnson, Karen Hoyt, and Jay Grimstead were involved in these first deliberations.

What Has ICBI Accomplished?

In October 1978, ICBI held a Summit Conference in Chicago with the express purpose of producing a statement defining the doctrine of inerrancy.  This resulted in the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy which consists of a short statement, a preface and 19 articles of affirmation and denial. This Statement was endorsed by nearly all the participants who represented many denominations and Christian organizations. This Statement has already been translated into Japanese, French, German and two African dialects and distributed in those countries.

The Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy

The authority of Scripture is a key issue for the Christian Church in this and every age. Those who profess faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are called to show the reality of their discipleship by humbly and faithfully obeying God's written Word. To stray from Scripture in faith or conduct is disloyalty to our Master. Recognition of the total truth and trustworthiness of Holy Scripture is essential to a full grasp and adequate confession of its authority.

The Chicago Statement on Biblical Application

  • We affirm that the one true and living God is the creator and sustainer of all things.
  • We affirm that this God can be known through His revelation of Himself in His inerrant written Word.
  • We affirm that this one God exists eternally in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, each of whom is fully God.
  • We affirm that this living, acting, speaking God entered into history through the Son Jesus Christ to bring salvation to the human race.

The Chicago Statement on Biblical Hermeneutics

Summit I of the International Council on Biblical Inerrancy took place in Chicago on October 26-28, 1978 for the purpose of affirming afresh the doctrine of the inerrancy of Scripture, making clear the understanding of it and warning against its denial. In the seven years since Summit I, God has blessed that effort in ways surpassing most anticipations. A gratifying show of helpful literature on the doctrine of inerrancy as well as a growing commitment to its value give cause to pour forth praise to our great God.
