A Guest Post by Carlton Wynne

A Westminster ST professor offers some thoughts on the Trinity.

Carlton Wynne, my neighbor in the Bowels of the Earth at Westminster, ST prof, and stalwart of Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, offers some thoughts on the Trinity while I head off briefly to Ref21 to address LGBTQ matters.

Properly identifying the God of Scripture and his relationship to issues of male-female complementarity in marital, ecclesiastical or broader cultural contexts requires exegetical sensitivity and prolonged reflection on historic, orthodox trinitarianism. I do not intend to engage in either of those tasks here.

So, Is Your God Loving?

The Christian and the Muslim sat across the table from one another in conversation, a conversation that went quickly from wives and children to theological matters.

My Muslim friend and I sat across the table from one another, enjoying gyros at a little Greek spot that had just opened. It was an exercise in co-education, each of us thoroughly convinced of our religious convictions yet wanting to be sure we heard opposing viewpoints accurately. So the Christian and the Muslim sat across the table from one another in conversation, a conversation that went quickly from wives and children to theological matters.

"But Is He with Us?" Section 4

Theme: One Body, Many Gifts

This week’s lessons remind us of the need to show unity in the gospel with other believers, including those who are different from us.

Scripture: Mark 9:33-40

There is only one way we will ever defeat this tendency to an improper narrowness in our view of Christian work, and that is to recover a vision of the greatness of the church as Christ’s body.

There is only one way we will ever defeat this tendency to an improper narrowness in our view of Christian work, and that is to recover a vision of the greatness of the church as Christ’s body. We need to recover the truth Paul writes about in 1 Corinthians: “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but the same God who works all of them in all men” (1 Cor. 12:4-6). According to this and other passages, the church contains a variety of gifts, styles, causes, and methods of ministry.

What is animating his accusation?

Jonathan Leeman's odd Tweet...

* Update - Jonathan has since posted a few gracious clarifications.

In case you have not seen it Jonathan Leeman of Nine Marks Minstries recently Tweeted the following:

I can't help but wonder if unspoken assumptions about the goodness of authority/submission are animating recent arguments over the Trinity.

1 Corinthians 11:3

Some helpful commentary on the submission of Christ...

Since 1 Corinthians 11:3 is a text to which those who uphold the Eternal Subordination of the Son point I offer the following small sampling of how others have interpreted the apostle’s words. Understand that it is the minority position to interpret 1 Corinthians 11:3 as suggesting that there is an eternally functioning subordination of Son to Father. That alone does not make the advocates wrong.

"But Is He with Us?" Section 3

Theme: Cause of Dissension

This week’s lessons remind us of the need to show unity in the gospel with other believers, including those who are different from us.

Scripture: Mark 9:33-40

I suppose that in the entire history of the church there has never been a division, however unnecessary or sordid, that has not been justified by some persons on spiritual grounds.

I suppose that in the entire history of the church there has never been a division, however unnecessary or sordid, that has not been justified by some persons on spiritual grounds. Yet if the truth be told, the great majority of them occur for base motives.

Motivated by Feminism? A Response to a Recent Criticism

UPDATE: Professor Denny Burk (with whom I have always previously enjoyed a cordial relationship and who is a brother in Christ, whatever our disagreements on this issue) has contacted me to offer to delete the relevant Twitter discussion and to assure me that he in no way meant to call into question my integrity.    I am very grateful to Denny for this clarification.  I leave the original post as is because I am aware that others have raised the same concerns but ask that it be read in the context of his contact with me.

"But Is He with Us?" Section 2

Theme: The Problem Explored

This week’s lessons remind us of the need to show unity in the gospel with other believers, including those who are different from us.

Scripture: Mark 9:33-40

In the incident we are studying, the exorcist not only did what he did in Christ’s name and therefore in open allegiance to Christ. He was also effective in what he did, for he was actually casting out demons.
In the incident we are studying, the exorcist not only did what he did in Christ’s name and therefore in open allegiance to Christ. He was also effective in what he did, for he was actually casting out demons. This indicates that his allegiance to Jesus was not in word only but by saving faith, for it is only as one is joined to Jesus by faith that power is seen in him. In other words, the man was a true believer in Jesus. His action was a proof of his profession.

A Plea to CBMW

Please make a statement of your position on the Trinity.

Is it important for a Christian parachurch organization to align with our faith’s historic, orthodox confessions on the Trinity?
