Grace Abounding - Part Four

THEME: A Great Prophecy

This week’s lessons review our study in Joshua, and demonstrate how the grace of God is seen even through His judgment against sin.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 21:1-45

At the end of Genesis, in chapter 49, Jacob gives a great prophecy that concerns the future of each of his sons and the people who should come from them. And when he gets to Simeon and Levi, it is this incident from Genesis 34 that he remembers. Here are his words: "Simeon and Levi are brothers—their swords are weapons of violence. Let me not enter their council, let me not join their assembly, for they have killed men in their anger and hamstrung oxen as they pleased. Cursed be their anger, so fierce, and their fury, so cruel" (vv. 5-7a). You see, even all those many years after that event, the horror of it still stuck in Jacob’s mind. And then he pronounced this prophecy: "I will scatter them in Jacob and disperse them in Israel" (v. 7b).

If you'd like, between 5:00 and 6:00 EST you can listen in on a live stream interview I am doing with Chris Arnzen at Iron Sharpens Iron. I'm told it will deal with issues related to my departure from broad evangelicalism to embrace confessional Presbyterianism. We may talk about puppies also.

Just go HERE at 5:00 and click on "Live Stream".

When Jesus is asked about the greatest commandment, he responds by quoting from Deuteronomy 6.[1]  Specifically, he quotes from the passage often called the Shema: “Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one.  You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”[2]

Umbrellas

Many of us own more umbrellas than we possess. We have bought them, but they have a habit of disappearing. They are ours, but they cannot keep us dry when it rains. They are as though we did not own them.

Grace Abounding - Part Three

THEME: The History behind the Cities

This week’s lessons review our study in Joshua, and demonstrate how the grace of God is seen even through His judgment against sin.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 21:1-45

Now in chapter 21, we find out more about these Levitical cities. Six of the 48 cities were for refuge; but there were still the other 42 cities that were scattered all throughout the land. Joshua 21 spells it out in great detail city by city, telling us exactly where these cities of the Levites were. This involves a very interesting story. To understand why the cities of the Levites were so important and why they were such a blessing, not only to the people but to the Levites themselves, you have to go back to Genesis 34. In that chapter there is one of the most unsavory portions of the Old Testament. And although some preachers might say that it is impossible to preach a sermon on a certain text, I don’t think that’s true. All Scripture, including these portions, is given for our instruction in righteousness and for our correction.

Thursday, October 21st was apparently ‘Back to the Future’ day – the day to which the characters played by Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd were propelled forward in time in Back to the Future II exactly 30 years ago. The occasion was marked in the UK with their legendary De Lorean sports car being rolled out again and the imaginary hover-boards that appeared in the movie being compared with the actual, albeit primitive versions that are available today.

8 Marks of a Spiritually Healthy Christian

What are the marks of a spiritually healthy believer? In 1 Thessalonians 1:6-10 we find Paul’s thanksgiving to God for spiritually healthy Christians. He tells the Thessalonians--who were relatively new converts--a number of remarkable truths about themselves. I don't think that there is anywhere else in the New Testament where such an explicitly positive report is made of a church and its members.

The Ornithologists Discovery

An ornithologist discovered a new plant in Scotland which had never before been found in the British Isles, and botanists immediately traveled to see the plant in its natural habitat. The plants were growing on two little rocky crests, composed of a slightly richer rock; they were surrounded on all sides by miles of nothing but wilderness. An ornithologist discovered the plant because any normal botanist would have despaired of the whole mountain long before he came in sight of its one rewarding acre.

Grace Abounding - Part Two

THEME: Christ Our Refuge

This week’s lessons review our study in Joshua, and demonstrate how the grace of God is seen even through His judgment against sin.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 21:1-45

Now, we stand at the very end of the third portion, after all the land has been divided up among the tribes. In addition, in chapters 20 and 21 we find a portion that deals with the establishing of certain special cities. There were 48 cities throughout Israel that were given to the priests, who came from the tribe of Levi. One category of these cities, the cities of refuge, we looked at last week. There were six of these cities, strategically spread out around the country, to which a person who had unintentionally killed another person could flee for refuge lest the avenger of blood should overtake him in accordance with the customs of that period.

When gene pools are somewhat skinny

The YRR's marketing strength is its spiritual weakness.

Todd’s post of last week points towards an important aspect of the YRR movement which explains the ubiquitous multitasking of key figures: the highly limited gene pool of its self-perpetuating leadership.  For a movement beset by scandals among some of its key players over the last few years, from those who do not understand the importance of the Trinity through to abusive leadership practices and adultery, it has proved remarkably resilient.   Even when leaders h
