Disgrace

Crazy Steven just keeps going...

The Southern Baptist Convetion has too many godly men and faithful pastors to ignore Steven Furtick's continued cavorting with false teachers. I was raised Southern Baptist. I love the SBC. And it breaks my heart to see this tickler of men's ears continue to spread confusion at best and heresy at worst.

You can see the latest sad example HERE.

From Triumph to Trivia

They won the battle.  But are they losing the war?

On the back of Todd's post yesterday, about Steven Furtick and the Southern Baptist Convention, there comes this from his friend, Perry Noble

Thought of Thoughts

When the disciples asked Jesus to teach them how to pray, He began by teaching them to open their prayers with the words, "Our Father." Surely, Christ could have used other forms of address. He could have taught us to pray, "Our Sovereign," "Our Lord," "Our Creator," or "Our God." But He doesn't. Insteas, He uttered the personal, the relational, the most intimate of names--He taught us to pray to "Our Father." Here are seven reasons why your soul should rattle with delight with the idea that God is your Father.

One of my seminary professors would routinely tell his students, "The most important thought that you will ever have is the first thought you have when you hear the word, 'God.'" I think that he is correct. Our first thought about God tends to dominate our lives and living more than any other. I would guess that very few Christians first think of God as "Father" when the word "God" is uttered. How rarely are we astonished by the fact that, in Jesus Christ, we are able to call God our Father.

I confess

Why the Second Amendment suddenly appeals to me.

As Aimee pointed out yesterday, the LORD does act on occasion to teach us a lesson and my confidence that having only biological sons would protect me from having to be in touch with my more tender emotions has proved ill-founded.  Of course, the great thing about being in the OPC is that the only emotions I have really needed to exercise are anger and righteous indignation. The ideal denomination for one such as myself.

Forest of Redwoods

On the coast of California are great forests of redwoods - sequoia sempervirens. The manner in which these trees grow is unlike that of any other tree. Two trees of this species may grow up year after year, a few feet from each other. Finally, sometimes after fifty or a hundred years, the trees touch, and the bark begins to overlap and fill out, so that the two trees ultimately become one. There have been cases where a dozen trees, springing up from the outer roots of a tree that has fallen, have formed a perfect circle. After a century or two, all have grown together so that one may walk between two trees into the empty heart of a great tree, and the ultimate outward appearance will be that of a single giant tree.

The Captain’s Last Sermon - Part Two

THEME: Who God Is and Who We Are

This week’s lessons describe Joshua’s last address to the Israelites, which emphasizes their need to determine to choose each and every day to serve the Lord.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 24:1-33

The point at which this sermon begins is with a reminder of what God had already done for the people in the past. Now that’s the pattern Joshua had used earlier in chapters 22 and 23. But here in chapter 24 we have the lengthiest rehearsal of all these great works of God on behalf of the people in past days. Joshua goes all the way back to Abraham, the father of the people, and even beyond Abraham, to Abraham’s father, Terah, and his grandfather, Nahor, when in those far distant days they worshipped other gods.

Fierce wolves with smiling faces

North Carolina Southern Baptists - You have a problem.

I have been preaching through the Book of Acts for over a year. This Sunday, Lord willing, I will be preaching from the second half of chapter 20. Following three years of ministry in Ephesus Paul circles back to Miletus so he can speak to the Ephesian elders one final time. Paul's words are filled with pathos and passion as he recounts the priorities of his ministry and charges them to exercise the same care for the church. He also warns them that as shepherds they have the responsibility to protect the flock from ravenous wolves.

Carl Trueman Has Abandoned His Own Dating Advice

We continue to conceal the identity of this poor, MAD Woman.

I have done some writing on difficulties of navigating the dating world now that I have daughters approaching that age. And we have done a Mortification of Spin podcast on the topic of courtship and dating, in which Carl’s biggest piece of advice was to just have sons.

But is he a man who can follow his own advice? At first glance, it may appear to be so, given the Truemans have two biological sons.

The Well

Women’s ministry has become a lucrative niche for Christian publishing. But are women, and therefore the church as a whole, being served well by it? Pastors are not always aware of what the women in their congregation are facing these days. And the market of books targeted to them can be overwhelming. Many women are gifted to teach, and all women are worth investing in. The Well is an interactive place that both elders and women can come to for book reviews, recommendations, teaching tips, questions, answers, and networking.

More than a feeling? Machen, Rieff, and Christian Liberalism

Part One of my ETS paper, "Reading Machen's Christianity and Liberalism after Obergefell versus Hodges."

To begin with a question: What would Gresham Machen think of the current state of the union with regard to sexual ethics and the connection between these and the increasing pressure on religious freedom?  I suspect he would be shocked by the particularities of the case, that the most private of human activities has become the most pressing public issue of the day and the single biggest factor in the challenge to religious freedom in the United States.  Yet
