Reformation Societies Introductory Kit

Reformation means standing against the spirit of the age, so pastors and church leaders must join together to encourage, equip, and embolden one another in the work of the Reformation. Most importantly, a society brings the Word of God and prayer to bear on the leaders themselves, strengthening them for the work of a faithful shepherd.

Predictable, all too predictable.

The fix is in.

The return of Tullian Tchividjian to a ministry role is scarcely surprising, though the speed would no doubt make even Jimmy Swaggart green with envy.

Join me as we give some thought to a nagging perennial question in theological circles. What is the relation of philosophy to theology? Are these antithetical? Are they virtually identical? Or are they kissing cousins? The antithetical perspective is seen in the now proverbial query of the North African lawyer-turned-theologian Tertullian, “What indeed has Athens to do with Jerusalem?  What concord is there between the Academy and the church?

Perhaps one of the most pervasive spiritual problems in human history is solipsism: extreme preoccupation with one’s self. In philosophy, it is the theory that only the self exists. In both cases, the practical implication is that we seem bent on thinking that everything is about us, and if it’s not, we have to find a way to argue why it should be, or even has to be.

Two Keys to Old Testament Prophecy

When Old Testament prophets predicted the future, they did so using the vocabulary and concepts they knew. With the passage of hundreds of years, the details, the visible form of the fulfillment often looks different. But the essential principles of their predictions are literally fulfilled...in three stages.

Grand Rapids, 1840. Freida heaves water up from a deep well to carry home for cooking, cleaning, and drinking. A long line of others wait for their turn.

The village Alderman catches up with her as she begins her long walk home and asks her: “What do you think about the new well, Freida?”

“It’s fantastic,” she responds, “The winch is much smoother, the bucket is much bigger, the whole process is much quicker, and the water is much safer.”

“Wow, that’s an amazing improvement!”

Ai, the Second Victory - Part Two

THEME: The Way to Victory

This week’s lessons recount Israel’s victory in their second attempt to conquer Ai.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 8:1-29

LESSON:

It is interesting that they had to do it again. You know, in the Christian life when you and I run into difficulty, we have a tendency to think that probably what the Lord is teaching us is that this isn't the way we should go. We should bypass the difficulty in order to find an easier road. I think younger people today are particularly susceptible to that kind of thinking, but it’s not that way in the Christian life. God’s way is a difficult way in some respects and easy in others. It’s easy if we depend upon Him because He prepares the way for us. He provides the victories, but He doesn't shortcut the battles. These still have to be fought.

Ai, the Second Victory - Part One

THEME: The Wages of Sin

This week’s lessons recount Israel’s victory in their second attempt to conquer Ai.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 8:1-29

LESSON:

We come now to Joshua 8, which recounts the victory of the Jewish armies over a little fortress high in the mountains that was known as Ai. If you know the book and have read ahead, you know that Joshua has 24 chapters. So the eighth chapter is a third of the way through the book, and yet, the people have only at this point reached the second city. Now there was a long time of preparation, both before and after they crossed the Jordan. There was also a delay in the last chapter, but it was because of a great failure on Israel’s part.
