The Longest Day - Part Three

THEME: Trying to Explain the Miraculous

This week’s lessons remind us of the unlimited power and ability of God to work for the good of all those who trust in him.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:1-15

Yesterday we concluded our study by mentioning the first explanation for the miracle of the sun and moon standing still. The second explanation is that the sun and moon appeared to actually stop because the earth itself actually stopped. Now as I say, anybody who believes in an omnipotent God in the final analysis doesn't really have difficulty with that. “Omnipotent” means “all-powerful.” And if “all-powerful” really means what it says, then to God all things are possible. The Lord Jesus Christ said that. He can stop the sun, the moon, and the stars. He can stop the earth; and He can do it without all of the bad effects that we suppose would have to follow on the basis of our knowledge of physics.

Started and Completed

The life that God has given us is the life of His Son. All whom He has called He has also justified, and all whom He has justified He counts as already glorified. God never begins anything that He does not bring to completion. The world may start that which it cannot finish, but God says: “He which hath begun a good work in you, will keep on perfecting it until the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6, author’s translation). Here are all three of the great doctrines of God’s work within us. He which hath begun a good work in you – that is justification – will keep on perfecting it – that is sanctification – until the day of Jesus Christ – that is glorification. There is no change in God, and there will be no change in His work in us.

“And I am sure of this, that He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ” (Philippians 1:6)

My Post on Complementarianism (Updated)

Why should Carl and Aimee get all the hate mail?

All good churches, all good movements, and all sound doctrines eventually attract a few outliers now and then. Calvinism, the pro-life movement, and even the OPC all have their loony hangers-on. This is also the case with complementarianism.

Before I go any further let me establish my bona fides…

I am committed to the clear biblical teaching concerning leadership in the church and home. God’s Word establishes that spiritual leadership in the church is provided by elders, an office to be filled by qualified men.

Why I Still Read Comboxes

Well, sometimes anyway...

There are plenty of trolls on the internet. But one thing I have always loved about blogging is being sharpened by thoughtful readers who leave comments.

I did not expect my post about John Piper’s answer to the question to the single woman who wishes to be a police officer to get as much attention as it has.

The Longest Day - Part Two

THEME: Nothing Is Impossible with God

This week’s lessons remind us of the unlimited power and ability of God to work for the good of all those who trust in him.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:1-15

So Joshua passed the word to his troops to get ready for a march. They were going to proceed back up the ravine that led to the hill country at night. And then they were going to fall upon this confederacy of the southern cities in the morning. The arrival of the Jewish troops was so unexpected and sudden that it threw the Canaanites into a panic. They fled before Israel, fleeing south from Gibeon, where the battle began, to this town called Beth-horon, which was up on a ridge. Then from Beth-horon, they went down the other side in a precipitous descent to a valley which lay beyond. The road falls about 700 feet in two miles at that point. The hillside is cut into rocky steps that descend towards the valley.

Two Audiences; Two Messages

Christ taught the people “as one who had authority, and not as their scribes” (Matthew 7:29). Follow Him, filled with His Spirit, and speak with like assurance. Luke begins to write “of those things which are most surely believed among us” (Luke 1:1 KJV). John writes with a certainty that is one of the marks of his authorship. We turn his Gospel and read: “But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). God is not primarily interested in the intellectual opinions of men, but He does want them to believe with that belief which produces life. He wants them to believe as one who believes the simple statements God has made concerning the death of His Son.

“But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” (John 20:31)

For various reasons, the words “scholar” and “pastor” are not put together as they once were.  There was once a time when the minister was the most educated man in the community.  And there came with that a concern, and perhaps even an expectation, that his pulpit ministry would bear the characteristics of serious academic preparation. That is not to say that he turned the sanctuary into a systematic theology lecture hall.  But it is to say that his formal theological studies, including systematic theology, would be appropriately taught through his weekly expositions of Scripture.  So as he was teaching his congregation the Bible, he was also teaching them systematic theology in a way so as to sharpen the mind and warm the heart.  The congregation came to know not only what the passage meant and what their response to it should be; they also discovered something of how its themes fit with the rest of Scripture, and something of how the church has communicated and passed on a faithful summary of the Christian faith down through its history.

The Longest Day - Part One

THEME: Preparing for the Attack

This week’s lessons remind us of the unlimited power and ability of God to work for the good of all those who trust in him.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:1-15

There’s a verse in the tenth chapter of Joshua that has been used to a great effect by Leland Wong, an evangelist out in California. It’s Joshua 10:13, which says, "The sun stood still." At the top of his letterhead, Leland Wong has printed three verses. The first is this one from Joshua 10. The second is II Kings 6:6, which says, "The iron did float." And the last is Psalm 48:14: "This God is our God." I’ve often used those verses to stress that we believe in a powerful God, the great God of the Bible who is able to do miracles. But did the iron really float? Did the sun really stand still?

Three quick questions for "thick" -- as opposed to "thin" -- complementarians

Can Christians vote for Carly Fiorina for President?  If so, aren't the questions of whether women should lift weights in the gym or how they should give traffic directions to men a bit of a non-issue?  Or am I missing something here?  I think we should be told.

So Systematic Theology guides the minister’s eye in preaching Christ through the Scriptures.  And for a Presbyterian, the Westminster Standards are the thematic writings that aid his thinking through the presentation of the Bible to his people.
