Today, we again come to this time for biblical content, Christ-centered content, logical content, and content resulting in obedience to God.

Let’s begin looking at seven churches. These churches are found in Revelation 2-3. They are seven churches like the one you and I attend and are a part of. Then again, perhaps not! Let us take a look. We begin with the Church at Ephesus, Revelation 2:1-7.

Where and how does a church excel in the sight of God?

Christ the Foundation Stone

In 1 Corinthians 3 we have the great New Testament illustration of this fact. Paul says, “According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and another man is building upon it. Let each man take care how he builds upon it. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:10-11). This is our only foundation. There is no other way to God. There may be a thousand ways to Christ, but there is only one way to God, and that is through Jesus.

The Covenant People and the Covenant Sign - Part One

Theme: The Final Aspect of the Crossing of the Jordan
This week’s lessons teach the importance of Israel’s consecration before they began their conquest of the Promised Land.

SCRIPTURE
Joshua 5:1-12

As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they
This week we are continuing our study in the third episode of Joshua, which is the crossing of the Jordan River. We learned last week that this third episode has three parts. The first part was the crossing of the Jordan itself, with the ark of the covenant going before the people. The second piece was God’s command to set up the memorial stones. Now this week we come to the third of the incidents that are connected with the crossing, and this concerns the consecration of the people once they had passed over into the land and had set up their memorial. The story is told in Joshua 5:1-12, and it entails two acts of consecration, which we would call sacraments.

In his classic book, The City of God, fourth century bishop, Aurelius Augustine, discusses a notable abuse of scripture in his day. He speaks of contemporaries who “allegorize all that concerns Paradise itself,” who teach “as if there could not be a real terrestrial Paradise!” (COG, 13.21).

Following Jesus 85

In Acts 2:14-41, the Apostle Peter preached the very first sermon containing the good news of the gospel. It was the first time the gospel was preached by an individual following the life, death, burial, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. What Peter preached is an enduring example for each and every pastor called and commissioned by God to preach the Word (2 Timothy 4:1-5). Like Peter on the Day of Pentecost, a pastor is commanded to preach a (1) Biblical sermon; a (2) Christ-centered sermon; a (3) logical sermon; and (4) an obedient unto God sermon.

Lest We Forget - Part Five

Theme: The Crossing of the Jordan Continued
This week’s lessons tell about the importance of God’s memorial as they crossed the Jordan and into the Promised Land.

SCRIPTURE
Joshua 4:1-24

When all the nation had finished passing over the Jordan, the Lord said to Joshua, “Take twelve men from the people, from each tribe a man, and command them, saying, ‘Take twelve stones from here out of the midst of the Jordan,
Now where does that leave us? The point I want to make is the one I have already been alluding to, namely, that we all need memorials like this in our lives. The people of Israel needed their memorials, and they needed other memorials besides this one. In 1 Samuel 7:12 we’re told of the prophet Samuel setting up a memorial which he called, “Ebenezer." It was the occasion of a great victory in which God had intervened in a supernatural way to defeat the Philistines. It says that in the remainder of Samuel’s lifetime the Philistines didn't invade the territory of Israel ever again. To mark that great victory, Samuel set up this stone, which he called, “Ebenezer," which means “the Lord helps." And he said, "We’re naming it ‘Ebenezer' because hitherto hath the Lord helped us."

Rejected by the Leaders 2

In quoting Psalm 118:22-23, Jesus is reminding the leaders of the scriptural greeting given to Him by the crowd at His Triumphal Entry. The Messiah, the one who would replace the evil tenants in the master’s vineyard, was, “the stone which the builders rejected”—and they were in the very act of rejecting Him. The Messiah as the Stone is set before us in two passages in Isaiah, which are then quoted in the New Testament (Isaiah 8:13-15; 28:16). This theme appears in all of the gospels and also in 1 Peter. It is understandable that Peter should have been interested in this subject—Peter means “rock,” and this was the name the Lord had given Simon.
Theme: Parables of Rejection

SCRIPTURE
Mark 12:1-12

And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country. When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed.

5 Reasons to Keep the Kids In

When we gather to worship, we are gathering around the throne of God in the heavenly places to sing the praises of our Triune God who has entered into covenant with His people. We, together with our children, are coming under the means of His grace that He has promised to bless as they are faithfully administered by His ministers and received by faith. We are coming into the presence of the Lamb who was slain to give Him the glory, honor and power due to His name. The One whom we are coming to worship is the One who said, "Let the little children come unto Me." One of the best ways to bring them to Jesus is to keep them in the service of His worship.

At New Covenant, we enthusiastically encourage parents to keep their children in the worship service--the whole worship service. Being with the congregation in the worship service from childhood is one of the greatest privileges that God has given to children growing up in a Christian home.

Following Jesus 84

The Apostle explains that first there is fellowship with Christ. Vs. 1. “I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,”

God’s vision for the church is to glorify Him (I Corinthians 10:31). The goal, aspiration and focus of the church is to bring God glory, honor and praise. The way in which this is to be done is not up for speculation. Rather, God has given us specific instructions as to how to go about glorifying Him. This is accomplished by God centered worship, evangelism, ministry, discipleship and finally the fellowship by followers of Jesus with God and with one another.
What are biblical characteristics of God glorifying fellowship? Ephesians 4:1-3 provides insight.

There are three specific reasons given for the erection of this memorial. It pertains to three different groups of people. The first reason is that it was to be a memorial to the generation then living, the generation that had crossed the Jordan. We find that in verse 6: "These stones are to serve as a sign among you." Here were people who had witnessed a great miracle of God in dividing the waters of the Jordan in order that they might cross on dry ground. But these same people would quite naturally tend on occasion to become discouraged during the years of fighting in their attempts to drive out the Canaanites. Their discouragement might be for a number of reasons.
