You are dutifully in worship on the Lord’s Day and the preacher exhorts you to “glorify” God.  The congregation dutifully nods their heads in agreement.  Their hearts are stirred by the lofty piety of the sentiment.  They leave with no clue what the preacher means!  In a similar fashion, how many times have you heard the expression:  “you just have to have faith”?  What does this expression mean?  Faith is a rich word with a variety of potential meanings in the scripture.

True Spirituality

Here is the question we must answer: what does it mean to have spiritual life, to have true fellowship with God while we live here on earth? The Pharisees and this worldly church-woman sought to purify the spirit by keeping the flesh clean. They believed they could solve the spiritual problem of sin with the solution of physical abstemiousness. But no, says Jesus, all that you do will never solve the problem of the human heart. It is what comes from the heart that determines one’s standing before God, and the uncleanness that Jesus cites reveals the truth of Jeremiah’s lament, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately corrupt; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

SCRIPTURE
Mark 7:31-37

Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. And they brought to him a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue.

The Great Commission - Part One

Theme: Going out with the good news.
This week’s lessons teach that proclaiming the gospel is a requirement for Christians.

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 28:16-20

Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.
I am sure you have noticed in your study of the New Testament that nearly all the resurrection appearances of Jesus end with his telling those to whom he appeared to announce the good news. It was the case with Mary Magdalene: “Go...to my brothers and tell them, I am returning to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God” (John 20:17). It was the case with the women who were returning from the tomb. The angel had told them: “He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead’” (Matthew 28:6-7). When Jesus appeared to the women shortly after that, he said, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me" (v. 10).

Bully Pulpit: Bookworms & Beach Bums

OK kids, it’s summer and your reading list is out! Grab your flip flops, sunscreen, a good read and join the Spin Gang by the shore. My my, Todd's looking rather bronzed in his white-beater and Bermuda shorts - those trips to the tanning salon really paid off. Aimee’s shownin' off her beach-smarts in an SPF 100 denim jumper - class! As for Carl, he was last seen turning 50 shades of red seeking refuge at the cabana… Zinfandel in hand. Scandal! So clearly our team doesn't do the beach well but at least they're well-read! Hear them share what they'll be reading this summer - it's an interesting mix of theological and fictional books to enhance any beach-bumming experience you may have planned this season.

Following Jesus 58

I am a follower of Jesus. This means I am one of His disciples who seeks to follow His leading, and obey His biblical teachings. This results in me, by the Holy Spirit, becoming more like Him in my character. Character refers to a person’s thinking, emotions and will which evidence an integrity, strength, uprightness and a strong moral fiber of obedience to God’s Word.

Forgiveness and the Christian's Piety

There are 12 words that can change, strengthen, and renew any relationship. These 12 words are: I was wrong. I am sorry. Please forgive me. I love you.

Before I was a pastor I served with the college ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. During my New Staff Training, we had the opportunity to hear from Bill Bright, the founder of Crusade. Our new staff class was actually the last class to be addressed by him before he died. By this time Dr. Bright was suffering from significant respiratory problems and was on oxygen and in a wheelchair. Through labored breaths, he said that he wanted to share with us one of the most important things we should know as we began our ministries.

The Resurrection of Jesus Christ - Part Five

Theme: The defeat of death.
This week’s lesson’s show us the joy of Jesus’ resurrection.

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 28:11-15

While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city and reported to the chief priests everything that had happened, "When the chief priests had met with the elders and devised a plan, they gave the soldiers a large sum of money, telling them, You are to say, His disciples came during the
Yesterday we addressed the importance of telling others the good news of the resurrection. Yet we must not be naive about the opposition. For the women who went to the tomb were not the only ones who knew about the resurrection, according to Matthew. The soldiers also knew about it. They were present when the angels rolled away the stone and were terrified by it. They went to the religious leaders to report what had happened. “Angels came! They opened the tomb! The body is not there!”

Sources of Temptation

Man’s sinful, rebellious nature is tempted to sin by three different forces: the world, the flesh, and the devil. This unholy trinity does not have the power to make a man sinful when he is not: we are born in sin, and the evil we find in our hearts we received from Adam. The temptations from these three sources are more like invitations to express that sinful nature in particular ways. The believer in Christ who has received a new nature from God can meet these temptations successfully if he or she follows biblical principles in the power of the Holy Spirit. But often we are confused even as to the sources of the temptations we encounter.

Mark 7:14-23

And he called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand: There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” And when he had entered the house and left the people, his disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, “Then are you also without understanding?

How are people today like Judas Iscariot? Especially people who claim to be followers of Jesus? I draw your attention to one of the most fearful texts of Scripture: Matthew 7:21-23. The text reads:

A Faithful Life

Every thinking man is a man of faith, but the question must be asked: faith in what? Today, men place their faith in a number of different objects that may easily lead to false hope; faith in the security of their job, faith in the numbers of their bank account, or faith in a favorite player to bring about a national title are just a few examples. John Bunyan linked faith and hope when he wrote, “As your faith is, such your hope will be. Hope is never ill when faith is well, nor strong if faith be weak.” That in which man places his faith and trust is that which he hopes will come to pass.

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” Psalm 20:7
