The Visit with the Ward Patient

A Christian visited a hospital and paused at each bed to say a word of prayer and give out a gospel or devotional tract. At the close of the visiting hour he came to the last bed in the ward and spoke to the patient very briefly: "Dear man, when you come to the end of this life, will you go to heaven?" In a tone of defiance the man replied, "Oh, I think I shall get to heaven all right." "What do you think they do in heaven?" asked the visitor.

Complementarian Passion vs. My Passion

Women Pastors vs. Competent Women

As Todd has already posted, things are not making much sense in the world of complementary leadership.

Now I'm really confused about Complementarianism

John Piper shares preaching duties with Christine Caine at Passion 2016...

Not long ago my MOS compadres received criticism (some of it rather harsh) for their critique of statements made by John Piper about the roles of women in society. There is no need to rehash that particular debate now. However, it is important to remind that we here at MOS share with John Piper and the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) the belief that preachers and office-bearers in the church are to be men. That is clear in Scripture.

Sovereign Grace - Part 1

Theme: Grace in Ephesians

This week’s lessons explain the importance of God’s sovereignty for a biblical

understanding of the doctrine of grace.

Scripture: Ephesians 1:3-8

In 1974, six years after I became pastor of Tenth Presbyterian Church, a number of seminarians, pastors, and myself launched a conference to promote Calvinistic doctrines which we felt were being widely neglected by most Christians. We did not know what to call our conference, but since it began in Philadelphia, we decided to call it the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology. It became quite popular, and in the years since it has been held in such widely scattered cities as San Francisco, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Chicago, Toronto, Memphis, Pittsburgh, and Atlanta, as well as its home city of Philadelphia.

Too Wide for the Door

In his mission field, a certain missionary had to do many things for himself and his family. When the baby grew too big for the carriage he started to build a bed for the child. After he prepared the wood, he glued the mortised pieces and was ready to complete the bed. His wife thought it too cold to work in the shed so he brought the materials into the kitchen and started to work. When the bed was finished, the baby was brought to the kitchen and placed in it while his parents gazed admiringly. Suddenly the father had a disquieting thought. Suppose the bed would not go through the door! Quickly he measured bed and door and found the bed one inch too wide to pass through.

Morning Needs

A prayer for the New Year.

This is a prayer that I have been using a lot lately from The Valley of Vision. Today I am seeing it in a new light, as it is a wonderful prayer for the new year:

Oh God, the Author of all good,

The Dawn of Grace - Part 5

Theme: Grace and Holiness

This week’s lessons show how the grace that came through Jesus Christ fits with the

perfect law of God and its condemnation against us for our sins.

Scripture: John 1:17

The question is: Why did Jesus not condemn the woman? Why did he not cast the first stone? We can understand that he wanted to be gracious. We would want to be ourselves. But how could he forgive her and still uphold the law? As soon as we reflect on that, we realize that the reason he did not condemn the woman is surely the same reason why he does not condemn us, if we are among those who have believed on him. Why does Jesus not pronounce a sentence of eternal death on those who come to him in faith today? It is because of his atoning work on the cross by which he was, at that time, soon to take upon himself the punishment for the sins of all whom the Father would give to him. Jesus forgave the woman, but he did not do it easily or in disregard of God's law. He did it because his death was to make forgiveness possible.

The Pharmacist's Mate

Aboard a United States submarine in enemy waters of the Pacific, a sailor was stricken with acute appendicitis. The nearest surgeon was thousands of miles away. Pharmacist Mate Wheller Lipes watched the seaman's temperature rise to 106 degrees. His only hope was an operation. Said Lipes: "I have watched doctors do it. I think I could. What do you say?" The sailor consented. In the wardroom, about the size of a pullman drawing room, the patient was stretched out on a table beneath a floodlight. The mate and assisting officers, dressed in reversed pajama tops, masked their faces with gauze. The crew stood by the diving planes to keep the ship steady; the cook boiled water for sterilizing. A tea strainer served as an antiseptic cone.

The School of Hospitality

Hospitality by itself is not a uniquely Christian concept. You can pick up a degree in Hospitality Business from your local college. The refreshment methods you learn there may gratify your flesh for a time, but when Christians practice hospitality, we don’t just offer methods--we offer our very selves in order to point people to the Rest that will satisfy eternally. You may not earn a degree by practicing Christian hospitality, but there are plenty of lessons to be learned in this school.

In Galatians 6:9-10, the Apostle Paul charged believers with the following exhortation: “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Doing good will be an uphill battle for believers until we are in heaven. We are prone to lose sight of the hope that we need to endure weariness. But our kind God provides for our weak frames by means of the fellowship of saints along the way.

The Dawn of Grace - Part 4

Theme: Jesus’ Gracious Actions

This week’s lessons show how the grace that came through Jesus Christ fits with the

perfect law of God and its condemnation against us for our sins.

Scripture: John 1:17

The problem these religious leaders brought to Jesus in John 8 was not like the earlier challenges about paying taxes or what life was going to be like in the resurrection. Concerning the test of the woman caught in adultery, there were three important matters at stake: 1.) the life of the woman, which was precious, at least to Jesus; 2.) Jesus' teaching about the gracious nature of his kingdom; and 3.) the law of Moses, which had been given by God. The way the question was posed, it seemed to the rulers that Jesus would have to sacrifice at least one and possibly two of these three elements. Jesus was known for being gracious. He taught that God was love, and he seemed himself to love sinners. But if Jesus should show love to the woman who had been caught in adultery and recommend that her life be spared, he would be setting himself against the divinely-given law of Moses. How could a teacher do that and still pretend to be a prophet sent by God? No one could both oppose the law of God and also speak for God at the same time. Jesus would be identified as a false teacher.
