The Word before All Words - Part 3

Theme: The Deity of the Word

This is certainly a season to think about the birth of Christ. This week we’ll

focus in on who Jesus is—not a little baby in a barn, but the God of Creation.

Scripture: John 1:1-4

Jesus is the Word, and he was with God even before the beginning. But John didn’t stop with this. He goes one to make two very important points.

The “Word was with God.” To say that Jesus was “in the beginning” and that he created all things might be construed to mean only that Jesus is another name for God. But while that is true in one sense—Jesus is God—it is false in another, because the logos about whom John is writing is not simply identical with God, the first person of the Trinity. Jesus is a distinct person in the Godhead. Following the statement that Jesus was “in the beginning,” John has therefore added a phrase affirming the existence of the logos as one who was “with” God. In other words, John understood the doctrine of the Trinity, and he has given us a subtle but accurate statement of the doctrine of the Trinity here.

Toadstools Versus Mushrooms

A woman risked her life and that of her family on a page from the National Geographic Magazine, when her husband brought some strange-looking things in from the fields. The family was undecided whether they were mushrooms or toadstools, until someone dug up a Geographic that showed plates of edible varieties. Their harvest was pictured, under the name of "Shaggy-mane," definitely "edible." With this as the basis of their faith, they prepared and ate the mushrooms. Nobody suffered.

Wheaton Professor Suspended

Doctrine matters. So does worship.

Earlier this week I offered a few observations about the decision of Wheaton College Professor Larycia Hawkins to wear a hijab during Advent to demonstrate her "solidarity" with Muslims. Christianity Today is now reporting that Wheaton has suspended the tenured professor while an inquiry can be conducted.

Carl's New Words

Carl expands our vocabulary to better navigate our times...

If you have not read Carl's piece over at First Things concerning Stephonknee Wolscht, the Canadian man (forgive my binary bigotry) and father of seven who now lives as a six year old girl, here is just a bit:

A Presbyterian, his wife, and an Archbishop walk into a bar....

Is it difficult to do the right thing?

In one of those surreal twists of fate that sounds like the start of a corny joke ('A presbyterian minister, his wife and an Archbishop walk into a bar....), the present Mrs Trueman and I recently found ourselves having dinner in a Philly pub with Charles Chaput, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Philadelphia.  Separated by a fair amount of theology, we are yet very much united by concerns over religious freedom and the chaos that is contemporary sexual identity politics.

The Uniqueness of Christian Parenting

There is something wonderfully unique about Christian parents. Christian parents seek to maintain a counter-cultural flavor even as we seek to prepare our children for entrance into that culture as fully-functioning adults. They seek to prepare their children for life on earth at the same time as they are seeking to prepare them for life in heaven. Christian parents see their children as a gift given to them and also as a stewardship to be respected. They are "our children" and yet we also recognize that they belong to another--namely to their Heavenly Father. Christian parenting is an odd endeavor and Christian parents are a rare breed.

The Word before All Words - Part 2

Theme: The Preexistence of the Word

This is certainly a season to think about the birth of Christ. This week we’ll

focus in on who Jesus is—not a little baby in a barn, but the God of Creation.

Scripture: John 1:1-4

Yesterday I spoke of how brilliant and amazing the preface to John’s gospel is, but let me add now that this is not only because of John’s use of the philosophical Greek term logos. In the first verse of the prologue John also tells us three important things about him. We’ll look at one of them today, and the other two tomorrow. The second verse summarizes those three things.

The Lost Race

To the participants in one of the Olympic games, loss of the four-hundred-meter relay race for women was a tragic incident. The Germans were far in the lead when the next-to-the-last girl came to pass the baton to the last runner. With a clear five-yard lead and the race as good as won, the baton was dropped. Pictures showed the despair on the face of the last runner as she realized what had happened. We sat one evening in Berlin looking at an illustrated magazine that showed pictures of the Olympics. The magazine had texts under the pictures in several languages. The English read: "They muffed the baton"; the French read: "le temoin," the French word for "witness." The idea was that the runner who reached the tape had to have the baton as a "witness" that the full distance had been covered by each of the runners.

True Beauty review

One of my Facebook friends, Janelle, was not looking forward to attending her district PTA meeting, but it wasn’t because of anything related to school issues. She lamented:

I can't say "District" anymore without thinking about the Hunger Games, so maybe this will provide some humorous relief for the kind of event that fills me with dread: a room full of Alpha moms who will be looking me up and down to a). see what I am wearing, and b). see if I am fat, and c). see if I have had any work done.
