We've been here before, have we not?

In which I quote a baseball person, for hopefully the first and last time.

The redoubtable Rachel Miller has found some fascinating instances of what would appear to be plagiarism.  To quote Yogi Berra, 'It's like deja-vu, all over again.'   But Rachel's only a woman, so I guess she has no authority to point this out.  Back to business as usual, then?

Housewife Theologian review MH

This book is for women—for all women who want to explore beneath the superficial and get to know God, and themselves, better.

While striving to find meaning amid the mundane and ordinary, many women find themselves swallowed up by culture's expectations, trying to escape the labels that trap and define them. But Aimee Byrd is determined to reclaim terms like housewife, which have divided many women, to unite them instead in their common calling.

Common Grace - Part 4

Theme: Even Bad Things Can Be Good Things

This week’s lessons teach the doctrine of common grace, and how it should lead people to the praise of God and, through saving grace, to faith in Jesus Christ.

Scripture: Isaiah 26:10

We do not repent because of grace, of course. We are going to explore that sad fact in a moment. But before we do, there is something else that needs to be noted about common grace. Up to now I have been showing that good things happen even to bad people. But now I want to acknowledge that bad things also happen, but that these are also good things in the sense that they should remind us of the destructive nature of sin, the shortness of life, and the need for redemption, so that we will seek God and find him through these bad but good things even if not through those which are an unmixed good.

The Elephantiasis Convert

A disease known as elephantiasis is a terrible scourge in tropical countries. The skin of the diseased becomes very thick, very hard, and fissured like an elephant's hide; the part affected is enormously enlarged. I have seen unfortunate people whose lower legs - running from above the knee down to the foot - were from twelve to fifteen inches in diameter. One poor sufferer from this disease heard the gospel of Jesus Christ and was transformed. He became a radiant Christian and did nothing but tell people of the grace of God, which He had showed in sending His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for them.

Female Brains and the Bestseller's List

Beth Moore's new book and how it fits into the Christian market for women.

Well, this is the time of year that bloggers are offering their top-ten, or for the more audacious, top 50 books of the year. I’ve never been one to rate my books, but I thought I might try something a little different. I thought I’d take a look at the current bestselling Christian books for women. I have just read the number two bestseller, as the number one was out of stock and is now in the mail.

I want to start this little essay by asking a somewhat provocative question: “When does eschatology begin?” Eschatology is a fancy little theological word that means the doctrine of the last things. Another way of putting the question to you is: “When do the last days begin?”

Christian Knowledge and Action

The Westminster Assembly crafted its confession and catechisms around a summary of the what the Bible taught. They summarized that teaching under two heads: what man is to believe concerning God and what duty God requires of man (Westminster Shorter Catechism Q. 3). Belief and duty are concordant and symphonic in God’s economy. Neither is a tack-on. We must guard against a strictly data mining the text. But we must also guard against closing our ears to a text unless we feel like it pertains to us. God exists, is near, and has spoken.

You’d think Pavlov invented it, that characteristic sound of a new instant message, the "buh-ding." That’s what Jack heard in his cubicle that morning, before caffeine had cleared the fog in his head. He clicked over to his messenger application as routinely as if distraction was a part of his job description.

“You’ve got to see this. I mean, we probably shouldn’t be watching this, but it’s a live web-stream of a home break-in,” the message from Jack’s coworker read.

Common Grace - Part 3

Theme: Common Grace on Mars Hill

This week’s lessons teach the doctrine of common grace, and how it should lead people to the praise of God and, through saving grace, to faith in Jesus Christ.

Scripture: Isaiah 26:10

The fourth expression of common grace from Acts 14 is the delay of God's judgment, which Paul described by saying that “in the past, he [God] let all nations go their own way” (v. 16). It brings us back to Jesus' teaching about the Galileans who were killed by Herod's soldiers. The amazing thing is not that bad things happened to these people but that so many good things happen to everyone. And the most amazing thing of all is that God had tolerated the evil of the unbelieving Gentile world for so long and had postponed (and continues to postpone) judging it severely.

The Young Wheelman

A confident young man walked into the captain's cabin of a Mississippi riverboat, and asked for a job as a wheelman. "What experience have you had on the river?" asked the captain. "Five years, sir." "Do you know the location of all the shoals and snags?" "No, sir, but I know where there ain't any, and that's where I calculate to steer." He got the job.
