Team Spin Takes Yale Divinity School, Part Two

Day Two of the seminar was less tense but just as stimulating.

While Aimee was off not doing stairs and trying to become a female Bond villain, on Tuesday the rest of Team Spin was refreshing the parts ot the theological world which other, more transformational, evangelical organizations cannot reach.

Classically and I think helpfully, this prayer is divided into two main parts. First comes the address and then six main petitions. Initially, there are God-ward petitions, followed by petitions for human need.

A. Let’s think about the Address first—it tells us how to approach God—the object of prayer. There are no other proper objects of prayer. We should address God with both reverence, as well as with a feeling of family relationship. It is not to angels or human saints, but this model prayer tells us to whom we pray. It is to:

Element of Surprise

There is one thing about Jesus’ ministry that never changed—have you noticed it? It is the ever–present element of surprise. Jesus was always doing the unexpected. He never followed another person’s prepackaged program. When He met John the Baptist, He overturned John’s desire to be baptized by Jesus by requesting that John do that very thing for Him instead. He outmaneuvered Satan’s power plays in the desert not with divine power, but in His humanity. Jesus resisted the earthly paths to power and success and instead won the victory over Satan with a humble submission to the word and will of the Father.

And when he returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them.

Matthew 27:11-14

Why did Pilate try so hard, grasping at no less than four stratagems, when he could not really have cared much about such matters and certainly did not have any natural instinct to act justly? One explanation is that he was probably impressed with Jesus. He seems to have marvelled at his calm self-possession and the fact that he did not try to defend himself against his accusers. Matthew reports this reaction saying, “Then Pilate asked him, ‘Don’t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?’ But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge—to the great amazement of the governor” (vv. 13,14).

Where I Make a Fool Out of Myself with Nunchucks:

My book trailer for Theological Fitness.

My new book, Theological Fitness: Why We Need A Fighting Faith, is now available (May 15th). Part of my contract with P&R is to provide a brief book trailer. That puts me in a bind right away because book trailers aren’t exactly as exciting as movie trailers. They are usually either boring or cheesy.

A theological earthquake shook my life over twenty years ago.  I can still see the classroom lit by the afternoon sun.  It was mostly quiet and peaceful that day with one exception.  A classmate was standing in front of me trying for all he was worth to persuade me of definite or limited atonement.  If the terminology is unfamiliar to you just remember that it is standard nomenclature used to describe the nature and the extent of Christ’s atonement.  To flesh this out even further, a Calvinist believes that “God’s method of saving men is to set upon them in his almighty grace, to purchase them to himself by the precious blood of his Son, to visit them in the inmost core of their being by the creative operations of his Spirit, and himself, the Lord God Almighty, to save them.”

Jesus' Prayer Life

After this long, arduous day, there is one more thing Mark would show us about Jesus. Mark writes in verses 35–39: “And in the morning, a great while before day, He rose and went out to a lonely place, and there He prayed. And Simon and those who were with Him pursued Him, and they found Him and said to Him, ‘Everyone is searching for You.’ And He said to them, ‘Let us go on to the next towns, that I may preach there also; for that is why I came out.’ And He went throughout all Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and casting out demons.”

Defending Life & Understanding Identity Politics

Where do our rights come from: God or Government? As Christians, how are we using (or should we say misusing) our American liberties? What does God have to say about abortion and sexual identity? These are pressing questions during an era submerged in promoting pro-choice and normalizing immoral sexual agendas. As Christians, we must know our stance. Frank Beckwith, professor of ethics, philosophy, and religion at Baylor University, and author of Defending Life: A Moral and Legal Case Against Abortion Choice, joins today's conversation. Hear Frank's fascinating defense against a society that twists virtue and hails immorality.

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 27:11-31

Three chapters ago when we were beginning a study of Christ’s trials, I pointed out that they present a unique situation in that Jesus was tried, on the one hand, by an ecclesiastical court, seeking to apply the revealed law of God to Jesus’ case, and, on the other hand, by a civil court seeking to apply what is generally thought to be the most highly developed law known to man. Jewish law was the most humane of legal systems. It did everything possible to preserve life and avoid executions. Roman law was known for its comprehensiveness, systematization of statutes, specification of procedures and affixing penalties. It has been said of the ancient World that Judea gave religion, Greece gave letters, and Rome gave law.

Reigning with Christ

There’s something even more amazing than ruling with the President and sharing in the President’s position and power. The Christian will reign with Christ, with the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Very few of us would like to be President. However, most of us, at least some of the time, would like to be involved with the President. We’d like to be able to share in his decision-making, to have some input and influence, to be in a position and possess the power to affect outcomes, and even to enjoy some of the privileges that go with such a position.
