We belong to a generation that is obsessed with its perceived ‘entitlements’. From human rights to civil rights, gay rights to children’s rights, the list is seemingly endless as to the permutations of personal fiefdoms people want to protect by law.

Something Important That I Have Learned From My Parents

Do you have a list of things you will do differently?

I am reading through Melissa Kruger’s new book, Walking with God in the Season of Motherhood, for review. This is not the review. It’s just a reflection about something Kruger says on p. 3.

3 Reasons to Think Much of Christ

The Prince of the Puritan Theologians, John Owen, once wrote, "Let us get it fixed on our souls, and in our minds, that this glory of Christ, in the divine constitution of his person, is the best, the most noble, useful, beneficial object that we can be conversant about in our thoughts, or cleave unto in our affections." In so writing, Owen was reflecting the clear teaching of Scripture on the importance of thinking rightly about Jesus Christ.

The Scriptures give us three primary reasons to think both rightly and much of Jesus. Consider the following:

The Challenge of Satan - Part Three

The third temptation reveals the true inner nature of sin. I know nothing more calculated to open our hearts and show us what we really are than to see Satan, the cringing, crawling coward, coming finally to say, “Look, I’m willing to lay all the cards on the table. I’m thirsty for credit—I want a little credit. I want You to admit that I am wonderful. If You’ll just get down on your knees once and worship me, if just once You will acknowledge my worth before the universe, it will satisfy me.” The Lord Jesus answered, “Begone, Satan! for it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and Him only shall you serve”’ (Matthew 4:10).

Mark 1:12-13

The Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. And he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. And he was with the wild animals, and the angels were ministering to him.

The Challenge of Satan - Part Two

In Satan’s second temptation of Christ, he tempted the Saviour to fanaticism. Thwarted in his first attempt, he said, “All right. You’re going to meet me as a man. You’re going to trust in the Word of God. You know, I’m something of a Bible student myself, and I found a verse back in the Psalms that says, ‘He will give his angels charge of you,’ and ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’

As a pastor, I find that many Christians recognize that their salvation has been accomplished and given to them by the grace of God. However, it is insufficient to hold that salvation comes through the grace of God. The real hallmark of a Christian moving to deeper maturity is whether or not they understand the salvation is by grace alone.

"My Name's Blurryface"

"Wake up, you need to make money!"

I’ve reached that point in my life where my kids are always trying to be the DJ in the car. And let me tell you, there are many “conversations” about the songs that are out now. If you will pardon my housewife theologian language, most of it is just crap.
Every now and then someone will enter the scene who actually sings about something that is thoughtful instead of consumed with body parts or a message about how great they are.

Fear and Faith

Or maybe comfort and hope.

I guess you wouldn’t expect me to use the word “comforting” to describe a book that is about fear. Well, that’s what happens when you read Trillia Newbell. She is an encourager, and her book isn’t only about fear, it’s about Fear and Faith.
Trillia is pretty transparent in this book about her own proclivity to fear.

The Temporary Fall of Peter - Part Two

Theme: God redeems our failures
This week’s lessons show us ways to walk faithfully with God

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 26:73-75

After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for your accent betrays you.” Then he began to invoke a curse on himse
We can visualize it something like this. Peter was brought into the courtyard of the high priest by a disciple who knew the high priest, probably John. As Peter came in he was recognized by the girl who kept the door, and although she didn't object to Peter’s presence initially, she most likely followed him into the courtyard where he had stopped to warm himself at a fire that was there. She asked her question at that point. John does not actually say that she asked her question at the door, only that it was asked by the girl who was “at the door” (v. 17). After this various questions were asked by different people, at the fire and near the outer gateway, leading to Peter’s second denial. Things seem to have settled down then, but sometime after this (Luke says, “about an hour later”), as the trial was drawing to a close, those who were in the courtyard accosted Peter again, among them the relative of the man Peter had attacked, who asked, “Didn't I see you with him in the olive grove” (John 18:26).
