The Bible represents God’s relationship to his human creation in terms of a two covenant structure (nicely summed up in the Westminster Confession of Faith 7.3,5, and 6). God created Adam and Eve within a covenant structure called the covenant of works in which God commanded our first parents to refrain from eating from the tree of knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:15-17). Implicit within the warning was a promise of confirmed blessed righteousness should Adam and Eve have obeyed God. Unfortunately as Genesis 3 reveals, Adam and Eve fell for the blandishments of Satan speaking through the serpent.

How to Help When There is Abuse

Domestic violence and sexual abuse are not easy topics to discuss, but they are ones every church leader must know how to address. Justin & Lindsey Holcomb, authors of Rid of My Disgrace: Hope and Healing for Victims of Sexual Assault, and Is It My Fault?: Hope and Healing for Those Suffering Domestic Violence, join the show today. What must a church do to promote a culture where victims feel safe to open up? What should pastors and church leadership do when a congregant reports a case of domestic violence or abuse? What the Holcombs say is as helpful as it is sobering - it's a conversation every pastor should heed.

Promoting Our Housewife Theologian

The Mad Woman in the Attic revealed!

At our recording session last week, la Diva was complaining in a loud, if not stentorian, voice that the Alliance doesn't promote her like other more prestigious outfits promote their famous housewife theologians, complete with snazzy photo shoots and respectful interviews.  Soooo...

Confessions, Oedipus Rex, and Dust in the Wind

Confessions are protests.  Which makes them more, not less, relevant at this moment in time.

Of all the advantages of creeds and confessions, the most neglected and yet one of the most important is the element of protest.  Forgive me indulging my Bannermania once again, but The Ecclesiologist puts it this way:

‘In its office to those that are without its pale, it is the duty of the Church, as the witness and protest for truth against the error and unbelief of the world, to frame and exhibit a public confession of its faith.’ (Church of Christ, 317)

Ministerial Friendships and Longevity

I’ve been in ministry long enough now (well over a decade) to see friends enter the ministry and then leave it. Some of those exits have been for honorable reasons and some for dishonorable. I serve on two credentialing committees and have coached a few church planters over the years. I wish I could protect my friends and the future pastors I have the privilege of training from ministry burnout--and I’m not alone in this desire. There are countless ministries--some more targeted than others--that focus on ministerial health. I’m writing within a specific tradition (i.e. as a Reformed, Presbyterian church planter), with my own, and our own, blind spots. As I’ve thought through and worked in this space, I’ve come to believe that there at least two givens and one blind spot when it comes to guarding against ministry burnout.

The Meaning of Baptism

Why was Christ baptized? John the Baptist was proclaiming the necessity of his baptism for the remission of sin. But Christ had no sin and, therefore, He needed no such baptism. The meaning of Christ’s baptism has been obscured by the current emphasis on baptism as the symbol of the death, burial, and resurrection of the believer with Christ. The spiritual significance of baptism goes beyond any concern with a particular mode of water baptism. Its true meaning is the identification of the believer with Christ.

SCRIPTURE
Mark 1:4-11

John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness and proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem were going out to him and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel's hair and wore a leather belt around his waist and ate locusts and wild honey.

When the Wicked Seize the City

An important and timely book

Some friends and I were recently talking about the book When the Wicked Seize a City by Chuck & Donna McIlhenny. Pastor McIlhenny served as pastor of First Orthodox Presbyterian Church in San Francisco beginning in the 1970’s.

Give Them Truth

A great book to help us teach our children the faith.

I have always benefitted greatly from reading Starr Meade’s books. She is one of the few authors who succeed at writing for children without succumbing to cheesiness.

Bannerman Take 3: Or, 3 take Bannerman

Wednesday night's discussion on Bannerman: a brief taster.

On Wednesday night, Banner of Truth and Westminster Bookstore finally launched the new edition of Bannerman. Patman from Banner HQ was there in the Bannermobile.  Benny was absent due to illness but the Jets turned up to man the bookstall (yes, we still 'man' things at Westminster). Even the Mad Woman in the Attic was seen lurking in the shadows and was recognized as such by at least one attendee – indicating that it is her evident madness, not her location in the attic, which is her most characteristic feature.
