3 Strange Christian Pleasures

In a sermon entitled “The Pleasantness of Religion,” Jonathan Edwards draws the following doctrine from Proverbs 24:13-14: “It would be worth the while to be religious if it were only for the pleasantness of it.”

The Coming New Normal

Bivocational ministry is set to become standard.

One of the problems with the stadium events of Big Eva to which I have occasionally pointed is that they showcase pastors who by definition do not have pastorates that are in any sense normal.  There is thus a danger that they foster unrealistic expectations among potential pastors and even congregations.  Most seminary students are not going to be the next John Piper, and the Bible church at the corner of your street is not going to be the next Redeemer, NY.  Yet the resistance to highlighting normal pastors and pastorates seems deeply ingrained.  My own plea to the T4G

Beauty, Truth, and Supreme Satisfaction

Have you ever had a deep sense of your insignificance? Have you ever had one of those leveling moments when you wonder why the heck God has allowed you to continue with the blessings and responsibilities that he has bestowed on you? Have you thought that you may not be able to keep it going, that the people who love you deserve more, and God deserves more as a witness to his name?

Jesus called this the poor in Spirit. My pastor is preaching through Matthew and we have now reached the Sermon on the Mount. Yesterday he preached on the first three beatitudes.

Preaching on Gender and Sexuality

Preaching the truth about gender and sexual ethics...

This Sunday I am beginning a four week hiatus from my current sermon series through the Book of Acts in order to preach a brief series addressing gender and homosexuality. As I am sure you know our culture has, with stunning rapidity, normalized homosexuality and deconstructed the very notion of gender as a biological category. What is more, confusion and outright compromise on these issues has entered the evangelical church. It is necessary it seems to me, for pastors to address issues of gender identity and biblical sexual ethics with greater frequency and clarity.

Top Men, Yes Men, Good Men

The importance of No Men in the eldership.

Just over a year ago I received an email from one of the Top Men, giving me the routine lecture about how my criticisms of him, his organization, and the culture which he had helped to foster amounted to mocking the work of God and taking a sinful delight in the struggles of the godly.  So far so predictable. But what struck me most about the tirade was a particular comment to the effect that he was telling me this because it was clear that none of my friends would do so.  He did not use the phrase, but clearly he regarded me as having surrounded myself with Yes Men.

Lonely with Friends

These days we use the word "friend" as loosely as "Sure, you look great in those jeans."

These days we use the word friend as loosely as “Sure, you look great in those jeans.”  And so we use a qualifying word when we want to express an actual friendship, a “He is a good friend,” or “She is a true friend” kind of thing. Plenty of thinkers have lamented that one can have 942 Facebook friends and still be a lonely person.

A Beautiful Picture of a Beautiful God

"The fundamental calling of leaders of God's people is not only to be undershepherds of the chief Shepherd but also under-beautifers of the chief Beautifier." If you are a leader of any sort in the church, buy and consume this book. If you feel a stagnation in your Christian life, read this book. If all you know of Edwards is the slanderously out-of-context excerpt from Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God in your high school literature class, read this book! Dane Ortlund has done the church a great service by giving us an accessible portrait of Edwards and the beautiful God he adored.

The Best Yes?

Why I have to be a Debbie Downer about the #1 Bestseller in Christian Women's Issues.

One of the main reasons I even began blogging and writing is that I sensed a real need for women to understand their responsibility to be good theologians. And even now as I travel and speak, I am finding that many women in churches under good teaching still do not have a firm grasp of confessional Christianity.
I meet so many wonderful women whom I would love to see reading better books.

Saving Sunday

The most beautiful display of the Kingdom of God is when the church gathers for corporate worship. There we gather as one people, confessing one Lord, sharing in one Spirit, singing with one voice, while resting together in the gospel of Jesus Christ

This past weekend in Chicago and the surrounding area we were blessed with almost 2 feet of snow. A number of churches suspended worship gatherings on Sunday due to the dangerous roads. Sometimes God's providence makes it difficult, and even impossible to gather for worship. But every year, on a few special Sundays, many churches choose to close their doors for other reasons. The Sunday nearest Christmas is one such Sunday. The rationale for closing the church doors on such Sundays is to allow families to have more time together, or to give overworked staff a rest from their labors.
