Amy Carmichael vs. Aimee Semple McPherson

My review of Iain Murray's biography got me thinking of another dynamic Aimee.

I love reading biographies of strong women in the faith. Ian Murray provides this in his biography, Amy Carmichael, ‘Beauty for Ashes.’ Some women in the church are truly magnetic.

Eva Fever

Beware Eva Fever...

Many of you are no doubt familiar with the sad tale of Congressman Aaron Schock. Representative Schock recently announced his resignation from the House amid scandals involving his spending habits. It seems Mr. Schock loves the high life. He famously, or infamously, spent many thousands of tax payer’s dollars to remodel his office in the style of Downton Abbey.

Maybe Christianity is Less Like a Journey and More Like Fitness Training

Because we're all tired of that word anyway.

About four years ago, I decided it was time to get more seriously involved in a workout routine. Having been raised in a family that values physical fitness, I have always lived a somewhat active life. However, in my thirties it became apparent that my body was not as obliging to my requests. It was time to get a little more disciplined if I wanted to feel as strong as I did in my twenties. So I did the practical thing for a mother of three: I started buying DVD workouts by experienced trainers. The first workout I did was an hour long.

The Cursed and Blessed Ground

The restoration of Eden moves from the Garden of Eden to the Land of Israel to the Temple to the incarnate Jesus to His eternal dwelling with His Bride, the Church. The Scriptures move through all of these "dwelling places" from the Garden-Temple (Gen. 2-3) to the Garden-Bride (Rev. 21-22). All of this is built upon the fact that man was made out of the "ground." A biblical-theological consideration of the "ground" will help us better tie all of this together from creation to the new creation in Christ.

In recent years it has become common for theologians to give focused treatment to the sphere (i.e. the sacred space) in which redemption occurs. The Temple motif--from the Garden of Eden to the Heavenly City (i.e. the New Jerusalem)--is traced out in such noteworthy works as O.

Before You Burn the Books

When a Bad Book at the Christian Bookstore Helped Build My Faith

I’m just going to go ahead and embarrass myself here---for the sake of the gospel and all. When I was a sophomore in college, I was heavily convicted that I was not living my life according to who I was---a Christian. But I also realized that I really didn’t have a lot of knowledge about the faith that I professed. I began attending a local church, and I wish I could say that they befriended me and discipled me.

Logos 6: A Review

I for one, have been converted. My books will still occupy my desk (I still like to be surrounded by my "friends") but Logos is a tool worth having and using.

Bible software programs have not been part of my life as a pastor. When preparing a lesson or sermon, my desk is littered with books and papers. It looks like chaos, but I assure you that it is organized chaos (most of the time!). In truth, Bible software hasn't piqued my interest very much at all through the years. I like the feel of books and I like to be surrounded by them.

Inheritance of Tears

"Trusting the Lord of Life When Death Visits the Womb"

This book is long overdue.
I have never suffered through the tragedy of a miscarriage, but a number of women I love have. I am so glad that Jessalyn Hutto has written a book for all those who have been affected by the loss of an unborn child.

Round and About

Interesting stuff from around the interwebs...

Christianity Today seems eager to rescue the good reputation of Margaret Sanger and show us the softer side of eugenics.

If you don’t read Ray Bradburry you are impoverishing yourself. Check out this piece on Bradburry’s moral imagination.

Avoiding a Spirit of Lethargy (Part 2)

For those of us in ministry, it is easy to fall into habit. We can comfortably slide into the dangerous act of rote performance of the duties of ministry. Those in ministry are rarely the ones to receive encouragement and support in the community.

The previous post in this two-part series began with the problem of spiritual lethargy which led us to the passage in Heb 6:1-12, a passage that is written for the expressed purpose that it would help against spiritually lethargy (v.12).
