Still Angry After All These Years

Gary Demar on Frank Schaeffer's latest rant...

Gary Demar delves into the angry mind of Frank Schaeffer. It is a dark place. Recently the pathologically angry Schaeffer fired off a screed directed at a Christian publishing house and the president of its parent company. Scaeffer's complaint? The Christian publishing house chose not to publish a pro-homosexual book. Schaeffer's post is a window into the mind of a man who seems to be ruled by anger and bitterness.

Do We Live in a Well-Run World?

A question that we are often confreonted with.

The MoS gang is once again gathering together in my hometown today to do a batch of recordings. Aside from hearing Carl repeatedly pronounce Maryland wrong, I am looking forward to what we have lined up for the day. One of our topics for discussion is the excellent commentary on Job by Christopher Ash.
Ash articulates the question that Job is stewing with and that God responds to in his first speech.

7 Ways to Become a Welcoming Church

What can be done to foster a spiritual friendliness and a welcoming culture in our churches?

In his important book, Outgrowing the Ingrown Church, Jack Miller recounted an experience he had at a church in which he had been invited to speak.

Round and About

Good stuff from around the interwebs...

Carl Trueman on Wesleyan University and our ever expanding gender categories.

Denny Burk has written a good piece on how "consent" fails when it is the only boundary to sexual expression.

The Cool Table

"I wish that I could be like the cool kids."

This week's MoS podcast is about Sunday. Well that reminded me of the cool table. I wrote it a couple of years ago, but it's a reflection from one of my favorite books:

10 Wisdom Principles on Hearing and Speaking

Restraint in speech, both in content and manner, is a mark of a Christian. How we say something can be as beneficial or harmful as what we say.

1. “Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding” (Proverbs 17:27-28).

Restraint in speech, both in content and manner, is a mark of a Christian. How we say something can be as beneficial or harmful as what we say. The unrestrained man, in either content or manner of speech, is an example of one without knowledge and understanding. As we meet and hear people who exhibit these characteristics, we ought to treat their report with great discretion.

Does a Mantilla Make Me More Feminine?

A friendly response to Luma Simms.

I consider Luma Simms a friend. We aren’t close in the sense that we keep tabs on everyday life kind of stuff, but we have met in person, we have communicated online, and we have even talked on the phone about some pretty deep matters in the Christian life. So it saddened me to see that she has converted to Roman Catholicism. I did ask her about this surprise, and Luma graciously responded.
Since then, she has written some interesting articles that have perplexed me a bit.

Three Keys to a Better Prayer Life

Whatever principles you may find helpful, of this much we can be assured: By praying consistently and by valuing quality over quantity, you’ll find that your prayer life will grow and blossom. We must go boldly before God's throne in order to develop a healthy prayer life that is consistently nurtured by His grace.

By God’s grace, I’ve been a Christian since I was 4 years old. Over the years my family has gone through many trying situations--my parents’ divorce, mom's remarriage and dad's developing dementia. Like you, I am very familiar with the fact that suffering comes on in full, and doesn’t seem to relent. Through the trials of life and my walk with God, I’ve been sustained over and over again by the rich streams of godly teaching on prayer and on the sure footing of a healthy prayer life. Prayer has played an integral role in my own spiritual growth.

When it comes to evangelicals and Lent, the enemy of my enemy.....

Well not quite. He is a friend but from across the Tiber.

David Mills has picked up on the in-house Protestant exchange at Ref21 on Lent.   He offers some Roman Catholic thoughts here.  We disagree on a lot of very important theology but on this issue, we are in agreement: Be one thing or the other; Don't try to have your catholic cake and eat it too.
