When a Christian Doesn't Want to Live Like One in College

MoS to discuss getting through college without becoming a heathen.

I’m headed up the road to participate in tomorrow’s live Mortification of Spin panel at Cairn University. This is going to be an interesting conversation. The topic is “Getting Through College Without Becoming a Heathen.”
Again, I find myself coming to the discussion with a noteworthy difference from my two cohosts, and probably many of the students attending a Christian university. I went to a secular university and, for the first 2+ years, was not living anywhere close to the Christian that I professed to be.

7 Ingredients of God's Perfect Happiness

In our fallen state, we obviously lack the perfect ingredients of perfect happiness, and thus can never expect to attain to it in this world. However, insofar as we grow in wisdom, goodness, holiness, etc., we will also grow in happiness. And what we sow in seed form here, will one day bloom into perfect and eternal flower.

"He is not so happy as he may be, who has not the pleasure of making others so, and of seeing them put into a happy condition by his means, which is the highest pleasure of a good and great mind." John Tillotson

Friendship sexualized, trivialized, and For Profit

Friendship is a category which has been debased in our society but which is important to understanding the drama of the Bible

On this week’s Spin, the Ref Pack deals with various aspects of pastoral ministry and culminates in a discussion of friendship.  Three friends discuss friendship, albeit under the unfriendly, cold, and calculating gaze of the Mad Woman in the Attic.

Clarity, Sanity, and Ferguson

Voddie Baucham weighs in on the situation in Ferguson...

After wading through some of the less than helpful and, frankly, pandering comments about Ferguson from some well known white evangelical "leaders" I found the peice by Voddie Baucham to be a most necessary corrective. You can read it HERE.

White evangelicals need to read Baucham's words carefully and stop their patronizing hand-wringing and the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Who do you want to bury you?

I’m really looking forward to a Mortification of Spin interview we will be doing with Todd Billings on his upcoming book, Rejoicing in Lament.

The Sheep Aren't Stupid

Pastors sometimes say stupid things. Sometimes those stupid things are catchy and wind up being repeated by many other pastors. One of the more preposterous pithy statements I have heard many preachers say is, “Sheep are dumb.” They say this as shepherds and are referring to the sheep of the church—the congregation. The idea is that sheep are dumb, and must be led well. We shouldn’t be surprised when they do stupid things. My problem with this statement is that it disrespects people made in God’s image and redeemed by God’s Son.

Confessions and The Relevant

Do we need to revise historic confessions to address modern challenges?

One question which I am frequently asked is whether we need a new confession, or at least some additional paragraphs or chapters, to deal with contemporary issues.  It is perhaps not surprising that the most common example cited is that of gay marriage.

Another Way to Look at Turkey

When we get our clocks cleaned in thanksgiving.

This is the month of Thankfulness. All you have to do is log on Facebook to affirm it. Many friends participate and show their gratitude by posting a different thing they are thankful for each day leading up to Thanksgiving. While it’s good to give thanks for our blessings, Flannery O’Connor’s short story, "The Turkey," made me reflect on both the grace God provides in ordinary life, as well as what he asks of his disciples.
