On Non-Contradictions

Brian Mattson schools Pete Enns

Since discovering that the Bible is riddled with errors and contradictions Peter Enns of Eastern University is rather enthusiastic about his project to expose us all to the glories of biblical errancy. Indeed, Dr. Enns' new book has received high praise from such evangelical luminaries as Brian MacLaren, Rob Bell, and Tony Jones. But Brian Mattson takes exception. Specfically he addresses Enns' contention that Exodus 12:8-9 and Deuteronomy 16:5-7 contradict each other.

Christocentric or Christomonic?

Many of us have joyfully welcomed the renaissance of Christ-centered preaching that churches in North America have undergone in recent decades. For some it has been an old practice to saturate their ministry with the person and work of the Savior. For others it is a relatively new thing to earnestly seek to proclaim their Savior in a more pervasive way in thier preaching. Praise God! If Christ is being proclaimed, the church has done well. Yet there is a fine line between being Christocentric (preaching the Scriptures in a Christ-centered way) and being Christomonic (preaching Christ to the exclusion of the Father and the Spirit).

A Follow-up on the VanDrunen Interview

Wondering if Carl and Aimee caught any grief over our interview with Professor VanDrunen.

Carl and Aimee,

I am wondering if you have received any criticism on our interview with David VanDrunen on MOS. I have not received any directly. But I did run across a few Facebook comments that were rather critical (social media makes men quite brave). Anyway, the criticisms were completely vague except for a few which were mainly critical of VanDrunen and 2K theology. As best I can figure out we are criticized for not challenging VanDrunen.

What's Happening at Notre Dame?

Rhetorical games and identity politics seems to be gaining the upper-hand at a preeminent Roman Catholic institution.

In the current struggles over identity politics and sexuality in the field of higher education (and indeed the church), we do well to hope that the Roman Catholics will hold the line.  I am not particularly sympathetic to Roman Catholic theology in the main, but the institution still carries huge (albeit diminishing) political weight, has the financial resources to fight legal cases on issues such as abortion, and has a history of social teaching which positions it well to engage clearly on ethical challenges.  Thus, it is worrying when flagship organisations connected to the RCC

Little Children and a Young Man - Part One

Theme: Riches and Blessing
This week's lesson teaches us how sacrifice brings blessing.

SCRIPTURE
Matthew 19:13-15

Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray.

Whenever you study the Bible, if you study it thoughtfully, you will find things that are wonderfully reasonable and balanced. For example, we are studying Matthew 18 and 19, and there is nothing more reasonable than the balanced arrangement of material in these chapters. They are about the character of those who belong to Christ’s kingdom, and they are tied together by a series of relationships: 1) to other believers (Who shall be greatest?); 2) to those who sin against us (How often must I forgive?); 3) to a husband or wife (Can I divorce?); 4) to children (Should they be included?); and 5) to money (Who, then, can be saved?)

Annoying the Right People

Disparaging the imitation of Christ?

I can usually tell that I will like someone when they are criticized by those whose praise would be cause for concern. Such is the case with Mark Jones over at Ref21. It seems Mark has earned the sneers of the usual suspects over at the curmudgeon’s corner. The problem is that Jones won’t let go of his odd notion that Christlikeness may actually be a worthwhile pursuit for, you know, Christians.

A Tale of Two Kingdoms

Can Christian callings be routine, boring and unglamorous?

Some months ago, the Ref Pack earned the ire of the Beautiful People when we raised the issue of why a well-know organisation's view of cultural engagement seemed ineradicably middle class and with more than a whiff of the preoccupations of the chatterati about it.  The offending article was about a Christian approach to high-end pastries.   To refute our claim, the series continued with (and I may have dreamed this because the recollection seems so bizarre) articles on Christian supermodeling and lawyering.  Well, in an attempt to answer the question 'Can a Chri

Art Not Thou Also One of His Disciples? - Part Two

The minute you speak of being His disciple, this implies ownership. We belong to Him. To be His disciple recognizes His claim on us. We are to follow Him. Everything a disciple has belongs to his owner. He is always in readiness to do whatever the owner wants him to do.

John 13:12-20

When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that you also sho
