Evangelistic Unbelief

It seems that unbelief is all the rage among some who identify themselves as Christian. Specifically, asserting that the Bible is filled with errors to the extent that Christianity needs redefining is, among some, a mark of a truly mature faith.

The Christology of 1 Timothy

When we introduce the subject of Christology, most minds immediately gravitate to such texts as Isaiah 53, John 1:1-14, Colossians 1:14-23, and Philippians 2:1-11; but, would you have thought of 1 Timothy as being a significant Christological work? When most think of this letter, they think of the role of church leadership or women. Rarely does the magisterial role of Christ come to mind. But let’s consider three valuable Christological confessions from 1 Timothy and see how they not only shape our understanding of Christ but also our understanding of this letter.

Terror

There is terror in the Bible as well as comfort. Some time ago a woman asked a Christian friend what warrant there was for saying that there would be some people who would not be in heaven. Why would not everyone be saved? The Christian gave an astonishing answer, but one which is perfectly valid. She replied that John 3:16 was the greatest proof that there were people who would be lost.

Now we know what Carl is doing in Europe

Allow me to interrupt all this substance for something really important. It has come to my attention that our own Carl Trueman has an avocation of which he seems quite passionate. I do not know if this presents any problem for his reputation as a serious historian or OPC pastor. I had to say a painful farewell to my own modeling career when I became a member of the Blue Ridge Presbytery (PCA). I confess to ignorance concerning the inner workings of the OPC but I suppose they grant their ministers a bit more latitude than I would have imagined.

Fearing the God Who Rescues?

The greatest rescue that God ever brought in Scripture was in the work of His own Son upon the cross. At the cross Christ did what he came to do, rescuing all of those who ever had or would believe on him (John 3:16). He brought peace with God. But there is a fearful aspect to the cross as well.

In Mark 4:35-41 we are confronted by the narrative of Christ’s stilling of the storm. It may be a familiar narrative, but if we pay close attention we will nonetheless be gripped by it. We should be especially keen to notice that the fear of the disciples is so intense that they even have the nerve to rebuke Jesus Himself. In their words we see that they believe they are going to die (see v. 38). Notice that when Jesus stills the storm and the danger has passed there is a new counter-intuitive reaction from the disciples: great fear.

Attitude

The world neither expects nor understands devotion to God. Non-Christians are actuated entirely by motives that are of and for self. When the unbeliever sees a believer looking to the Lord he turns his gaze heavenward, and seeing nothing but clouds, he thinks that there is something slightly wrong with the believer.

The Fallacy of the Sanhedrin

The power and boldness of those who witness for Christ do not come from any spiritual experience of the past, but from present, active contact with the risen Lord. The first experience is not to be discounted, but in no wise can it be made to account for the present strength of believers.

The Heart of Family Worship

My wife and I like to talk about family worship--not because we have it all figured out, but because we actually enjoy experimenting with different ways to draw ourselves and our five daughters to God (Yes, five! Yes, daughters!). Of course, family worship with little children can be particularly intimidating to young parents trying the balance the complexities that go with that season of life. Be encouraged, meaningful family worship is within reach.

Words Fitly Spoken

"A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver" (Prov. 25:11), or perhaps a little closer to the Hebrew, "like apples of gold sculptured against a background of silver." The idea is that an arrow which hits the target is better than a dozen arrows which fall short. One of the happiest things that a minister of the Gospel can hear is that a word he has spoken in his sermon, when totally unconscious of the need of an individual, has been the exact word needed for an individual.
