Hillsong's "Journey"

Hillsong flinches on sexual sin.

It was inevitable I suppose. When a church operates as a global brand the need to stay fashionable is of prime importance. So it is not surprising that Hillsong, the multinational mega-church founded in Australia is now openly capitulating on biblical sexual ethics. Carl Lentz the uber hip rock star pastor of Hillsong New York made headlines not long ago for refusing to answser questions regarding homosexuality. Lentz' wife Laura recently said, "It's not our place to tell anyone how they should live. That's their journey." Of course that's all blather.

The secret of big evangelicalism is the secret of great comedy

The simple secret you need to know in order to succeed in Big Eva's world.

La Diva's question about evangelicalism and sentimentality is an important one but I would like to expand its reference by pointing to the close connection between sentimentality and aesthetics.  We live in an age where matters of taste, defined often by emotional, sentimental reactions, are largely determinative of moral truth.  This plays its part even in the culture of conservative Big Evangelicalism.  And, in a world of sentiment and aesthetics, an i

Kruger Reviews Enns

Dr. Michael Kruger reviews Peter Enns' new book on Scripture.

Dr. Michael Kruger of Reformed Theological Seminary has written a helpful, clear, and appropriately corrective review of Dr. Peter Enns' (Eastern University) newest book The Bible Tells Me So.

Dr. Kruger explains Dr. Enns' project:
Enns is pushing back against another core historical tenet of the Christian faith: our belief about Scripture—what it is and what it does. The Bible isn’t doing what we think it’s doing, he argues.

Are Evangelicals Too Sentimental?

While McCullough concedes that yes, sentimentality is certainly a powerful factor that we need to take seriously, he is not convinced that it has affected evangelicalism to the extent that Brenneman describes in his book. He pushes back saying:

My cohorts and I have been reading through Todd M. Brenneman’s Homespun Gospel for a future podcast. So the recent book review of it over at 9 Marks was interesting to me. Matt McCullough does some interacting with the book.

Hey Haters!

Dissent from whatever the most powerful lobby groups decide is the consensus might soon be legally risky.

The news was buzzing yesterday with stories of the apparent  infringement of religious freedom in Houston.   Ed Whelan offered a report on events in the National Review Online and Mark Movsesian today provided a characteristically nuanced legal account at First Thoughts, which corrects some of the wilder interpretations out there while still indicating that there is a serious cause

Pain in Christian Marriage

Marriage can be painful--and Christian marriage is no exception. When two sinners are in a relationship as intimate as marriage, there is bound to be some measure of hurt. Our flesh will balk at the demands of self-sacrifice, service, and humility affecting one another for ill. There will be sins committed, wounds aggravated, and injuries inflicted. The extent will vary with each relationship. Some will be more challenging than others, but every Christian marriage experiences some pain.

In answer to Todd's question

In which I try to answer Todd's question.

In answering Todd's question about growing as a preacher, I offer the following thoughts in no particular order of priority:

Becoming A Better Preacher

Is it possible to become a better preacher?

Hershael York has written an excellent little article on preaching entitled Four Reasons Why Some Preachers Get Better and Others Don’t.

The article poses a good question: Can preaching be taught? In other words, is it possible for someone not brimming with natural gifts of communication learn how to be a good preacher?

The Enemy Without, the Enemy Within

While this week's Spincast deals with discipleship, there is still more to be said on church discipline and how it connects to our broader theological convictions. Zwinglians, consider this to be your first formal warning.

The Roman Catholics may have had a Popessa, but here at the HQ of the Irascible, Reconditioned and Replaceable, we have our own Iron Lady who rules with a cold and ruthless fist in the name of Puppet Master.  No, not La Diva, but the Mad Woman in the Attic whose long, sinister shadow can be felt behind this week’s Spincast.  Indeed, chille

Reading the Psalms Devotionally

The Psalms form the largest corpus of one of the most unique genres within the biblical canon, namely, the genre of song and poetry. Evangelical Christians tend to neglect that genre for different reasons. In our post-Reformation, post-enlightenment Western way of thinking, most of us think that the more didactic sections of Scripture are more important because they are full of logical and propositional statements. Some think that poetry and song are somehow less manly. This is entirely an unorthodox view of song, worship, and masculinity.
