God, Divorce, and Apostasy - Part One

Malachi 2:10 - 16
Theme: Faithlessness.
This week’s lessons teach us why God hates divorce.

Lesson

If you are married, it is likely that the most solemn, official commitment you have made in your entire life was when you stood before a minister of the gospel and promised to take your spouse as husband or wife in plenty or in want, in joy or in sorrow, in sickness or in health as long you both shall live.

What Good Whiskey and Good Theologians Have in Common

In the spirit of today's Mortification of Spin, I thought I'd share something from Housewife Theologian. You know, in case you don't know Jack:

Conscience

There are many people who believe that conscience is a safe guide. There are those who refuse to accept Christ, as they claim to find sufficient light in their own consciences. The folly of such an attitude is apparent to those who know the truth about the human conscience, and even more apparent to those who know the Word of God.

Recreation on the Day of Re-Creation?

Saint Aurelius Augustine (354-430) had his finger on the pulse of all men, when he confessed, “O Lord, you have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless, until they find their rest in Thee” (Confessions, 1.1). Ever since our first parents gave up restful communion with God in favor of servile hiding from him and were banished from the Garden of Eden (lest they take and eat of the Tree of Life and live forever in their restless, fallen condition – Ge 3:22), we have been a people in desperate need of rest. Our forebears in the faith wandered in the Egyptian wilderness and rest was hard to come by. The Prophets of the OT called out to a people unable to wring rest out of their rebellion. Indeed, before Augustine ever confessed, Christ called out, “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Mt 28:11-30, ESV).

Fellowship?

Yes, there is an interrogation point after this title, for we are interested in making you think about the word, and want you to ask yourself if you have any Christian fellowship. If you begin to think about the number of faithful Christians you know, and the good times you have had together, you have brought yourself to the place of vulnerability, and are wide open to the thrust we wish to make into your complacency.

Loving Husbands, Happy Wives - Part Five

Ephesians 5:22-33
Theme: Love and submission.
This week’s lessons teach us the only path to marital bliss.

Lesson

In this lesson on marriage, I think here of something C. S. Lewis said in one of his writings. He wrote that because we are eternal beings, created with eternal souls, in the ages to come each of us is going to be either some dazzlingly beautiful creature, one that would overwhelm us with awe if we were to see such a creature now, or else an everlasting horror, from which we would all recoil - depending upon our having entered into (or not having entered into) salvation through Jesus Christ. Here is realistic eschatology.

Older Circles and Inner Circles

When a man becomes a Christian he not only gives assent to a new set of beliefs, but he also finds that he has a new life, a new stream of thought, and that he lives in an entirely different society. He is now a member of the body of Christ. He does not cease to be a member of his family, but he has a new relationship with that family. He does not cease to be a member of his work group, but he has a new relationship with that work group. He does not cease to be a citizen of his country, but he has a new relationship to his country.

Observations from my first PCA General Assembly

Last week (June 17-20) the 42nd annual General Assembly of the PCA was held in Houston, TX. Being a rather newly minted Teaching Elder in the PCA, this was my first General Assembly. For the most part I was encouraged.

Here are a few of my observations:

1. It was great to meet and spend time with brothers who love Christ and His Church.

2. I am grateful for the Book of Church Order (BCO).

Back in the day, I owned a pretty awesome coffee caf?? in downtown Frederick, MD. We had all kinds of cool stuff going on, but one thing that really drew in a crowd was the live entertainment.

Loving Husbands, Happy Wives - Part Four

Ephesians 5:22-33
Theme: Love and submission.
This week’s lessons teach us the only path to marital bliss.

Lesson

The second verb Paul used, gave, is also found in verse 25: Christ gave himself up for the church. The full measure of Christ’s love for the church was his dying for her. We are told in one of the Greek histories that the wife of one of the generals of Cyrus, the ruler of Persia, was accused of treachery and was condemned to die. At first, her husband did not know what was taking place. But as soon as he heard about it, he rushed to the palace and burst into the throne room. He threw himself on the floor before the king and cried out, "Oh, my Lord Cyrus, take my life instead of hers. Let me die in her place."
