Practical Living

There is one part of Christianity which can never be confused; that is the practical outworking of the doctrines which we hold as the revelation of God's will for us. An unbeliever may bring forth an argument against a doctrine, but he can never argue against a holy life, except to hate it and say that the one who is living it is missing the sinful joys which the world holds to be paramount.

Loving Husbands, Happy Wives - Part Three

Ephesians 5:22-33
Theme: Love and submission.
This week’s lessons teach us the only path to marital bliss.

Lesson

So far as marriage is concerned, Paul is saying that the wife is to assume a subordinate role in the home. This is not due to a lack of equality. The equality of male and female, child and parent, servant and master as to their being made in God's image and being valuable to God is absolute and unquestionable. Moreover, the subordination involved, particularly that of the wife and child, is voluntary. No woman need accept the proposal of any man.

Our Shepherd Knows Our Needs

The Lord knows us and knows our afflictions. In Mark 6:30-44 we have a beautiful picture of this knowledge of the Lord and the compassion that flows from Him in light of this knowledge.

Members of the Body

The deep truth of our union with Christ, He the Head and we the body, has been a source of such blessing to believers that it is frequently studied. The other phase of that truth, though, that we individual believers are members one of another, is not so frequently stated.

Much needed clarity on sanctification

On Wednesday of General Assembly, the Gospel Reformation Network sponsored a luncheon with Derek Thomas as the featured speaker. His subject was sanctification. It is an address that is desperately needed in the church today. As recent months have proven, it is desperately needed within the PCA where confusion over sanctification has been on public display.

Loving Husbands, Happy Wives - Part Two

Ephesians 5:22-33
Theme: Love and submission.
This week’s lessons teach us the only path to marital bliss.

Lesson

Our real failure is that we do not follow God’s directions for marriage. This is what Paul is concerned with in Ephesians, as he gives instructions first to the wife and then to the husband. To the wives he says, "Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything" (vv. 22-24).

Lesson

I have called this study of Ephesians 5:22-33 "Loving Husbands, Happy Wives" because of Paul's clear instructions and desire in the passage. But I admit, as I begin, that this or any other title commending marriage is a bit of an embarrassment in our day. It is because many of today’s marriages are in dreadful shape, and anything other than pessimistic comments makes many people uneasy and even hostile when the subject comes up.

Living

A person who really wishes to learn how to live life more successfully must first know whether he has life to live, or whether he possesses nothing more than mere existence. When a man knows that he has "life," he knows that it is not earthly life, but eternal life, and that it bears a divine quality which makes living something more than existence.

The First Great Christian Institution - Part Five

Ephesians 5:21-33
Theme: Marriage.
This week’s lessons teach us that when the institution of marriage crumbles, society crumbles.

Lesson

I think of the story where the man with the withered hand was confronted by Christ and was told to stretch it forth. Humanly speaking, he couldn’t stretch forth his hand. That was his problem. His hand was withered. But when Jesus said, "Stretch it forth," he stretched it forth. He obeyed the command. And in obedience came the healing that he needs. Don’t say, "I believe it. It’s true, but I can’t do it." You never know what you can do until you step out in obedience to God.

The Heart

A story is told which is very gripping in its human interest. A young officer, blinded during the war, was rehabilitated in an Army hospital. During this time he met and later married one of the nurses who took care of him. He had a tremendous devotion to her and loved her dearly. One day his keen sense of hearing overheard someone in the distance speaking about himself and his wife. "It was lucky for her that he was blind, since he never would have married so homely a woman if he had had eyes." He rose to his feet and walked toward the voices, saying, "I overheard what you said, and I thank God from the depths of my heart for blindness of eyes which might have kept me from seeing the marvelous worth of the soul of this woman who is my wife.
