Time and Patience

Fabre, the greatest naturalist who ever lived, began the main part of his work at sixty; he was able to give all his time to it when he was seventy; and he was discovered by fame at the age of ninety. He had done all of his work without a laboratory; all of his insects had been raised in old flower pots and sardine cans. He always referred to his two best instruments as "time" and "patience."

Dividing the Land - Part Five

THEME: Living in the Kingdom

This week’s lessons teach us about God’s faithfulness in settling each of Israel’s tribes in their territories, and what our response needs to be toward his directing of our lives.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 13:1-19:51

There’s also personal holiness. That's not something that just falls upon us like a mantle. That's something that is achieved by small decisions day by day. You have to enter into holiness step by step, act by act, obedience by obedience. Another possession are the gifts of the Holy Spirit. According to the New Testament, every Christian has been given a gift. And yet, many people aren’t even aware of what their gift is. Or if they are, they don't always use it very well. We have to possess that gift in a personal, practical way.

The ascension, Christ’s post-resurrection going up into heavenly exaltation to sit at the right hand of His Father. A misunderstood doctrine within Christology, the Ascension of Jesus Christ is often thought as an event, missing its theological significance. The ascension of Jesus Christ is directly related to His Offices, His Gospel, His Resurrection, His Kingdom, and His Covenant.

“’There are no private affairs,’” one of the “bright people” says to the “big ghost” in C.S. Lewis’ The Great Divorce. Believers know the reality of that statement. And it is probably something that everyone really knows, but suppress the truth in unrighteousness. In fact, our culture leads us to believe we can create our own reality.

Corot's Pond

While Jean Francois Raffaeli, the French art critic was walking near the village of Barbizon he saw the renowned Jean Baptiste Corot painting a meadow, with woods in the background. Raffaeli saw that Corot had put in a small lake, although actually there was no lake in the field before him. "But, Monsieur Corot!" he exclaimed, "is it permissible to paint a pond where there is no pond?" Corot retorted, "Young man, it is eleven o'clock. I have been here in the field since six this morning. I became very thirsty, so I put water in the picture to refresh myself."

Dividing the Land - Part Four

THEME: God’s Faithfulness and Ours

This week’s lessons teach us about God’s faithfulness in settling each of Israel’s tribes in their territories, and what our response needs to be toward his directing of our lives.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 13:1-19:51

In the previous studies when we were looking at the battles in the south and the north, we took time to look at some of the great characteristics of Joshua. This is certainly a point where we can look at his character and say that if anything characterized this man in a complimentary way, it was certainly his faithfulness in duty to the very end. Even at his advanced age, Joshua was carrying out the duty God had assigned him. Here was a man who was given a task to do, and he did it. He kept at it year after year. He didn't take his hands off and retire to his city until the task that had been assigned to him was completed.

Every year, I teach theology classes to people who’ve never formally studied theology in the past.  Some of my classes are with churches or on retreats; some are with undergraduate students; some for graduate students, training for gospel ministry.  In each case, I start by asking my students what they believe are the essential elements of the Christian faith – the irreducible minimum of the gospel and Christian doctrine.  I can’t recall a single person who mentioned the bodily ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven.

A Brief but Brilliant Book on Ministry

An excellent new book on preparing for ministry.

This autumn is proving a vintage season for books on ministry.  Jason Helopoulos’ book arrived a few weeks ago, and Kent Hughes’ massive tome is about to be published.  Plus the redoubtable Jim Garretson has another gem on a
