How Do I Know That God Loves Me?

How do we know God loves us, and what does His love look like? How we answer these questions, and we all hold answers to those questions whether we are aware of them or not, is what determines our view of God and the health of our faith.

In nearly 20 years of pastoral ministry I have seen two kinds of people who struggle with the concept of God’s love. On the one hand we have those who simply assume God loves them and give it very little thought. On the other hand many doubt God’s love for them as they tend to evaluate his love based on their circumstances.

How do we know God loves us, and what does His love look like? How we answer these questions, and we all hold answers to those questions whether we are aware of them or not, is what determines our view of God and the health of our faith.

Never Got Caught

A man filling out a job application blank came to the question, "Have you ever been arrested?" His answer was "No." The next question, asking "Why?", was meant for those who had answered the first part in the affirmative. Nevertheless, the applicant answered it with, "Never got caught." That was the truth.

The Northern Campaign - Part Two

THEME: Joshua’s Leadership Characteristics

This week’s lessons conclude the account of the southern and northern campaigns, and show us the necessity of committed obedience to God in all things.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 11:1-12:24

In our study of the southern campaign I talked about Joshua’s leadership characteristics. This story of the northern campaign reminds us of the importance of spiritual leadership. The same principles that he put into practice in his military campaigns are principles that you and I need to put into our spiritual campaigns. We saw in the first place that Joshua never seemed to allow short-term gains to turn him back from long-range objectives. He knew what he was there to do. He was there to conquer the land and to do away with the kings and the armies of the cities. And even though he saw short-term things that might have been quite attractive at the time, he never turned aside to what was a lesser objective.

The steady flow of articles on theology posted on this website in recent months has been enormously helpful. As I have found myself encouraged and challenged by much of what has been said, I thought I might be able to add one further reflection to the mix of what has already been written. It has to do with the final journey our theology makes from the pulpit to the pew and what it ought to achieve when it gets there.

Love and Fidelity

The Love and Fidelity Network.

Anyone who has a child at a college or university will know the huge pressure that is put on students these days to conform to the sexual mores of the age.  The Love and Fidelity Network is an organization desgined to promote sane views of sex on campuses, with an appropriately thoughtful philosophy of sex and sexuality.  Their website is here.  I had the pleasure of chatting briefly with two of the leaders at a meeting in New York last year.  It is good to know that there some young people flying the flag for sexual sanity i

In A.D. 325 the Council of Nicaea was convened by Constantine, emperor of the Roman Empire, to unify the Church’s teaching.  Of its various accomplishments, it is best known for settling and formalizing the orthodox view of Christ; this was in response to the heretical teaching of Arius, a popular presbyter from Alexandria, Egypt.

The Wave of the Future

It is past time that bivocational ministry became a serious subject for reflection and planning.

Yesterday I was given a copy of Jason Helopoulos's new book, The New Pastor's Handbook: Help and Encouragement for the First Years of Ministry.  It looks excellent, with short chapters on a whole collection of important themes, from the nature of a call to the difference between lectures and sermons.  It seems like a great book to buy, to read, and to discuss.  With this and the imminent arrival of Kent Hughes

Meershaum Pipes

When we were in Holland, we wanted to spend Sunday at Marken, a beautiful little island northeast of Amsterdam. Since there was no hotel there, we stayed in a town four miles away in order to take the ferry over in the morning. The women of the town wear turned-up caps, and the men wear big, baggy trousers and wooden shoes, and smoke Meerschaum pipes - great big pipes about as big as a saxaphone. In the morning, while we waited for the ferry we noticed several hundred villagers gathering for the Catholic church service across the street.

The Northern Campaign - Part One

THEME: The Northern Coalition

This week’s lessons conclude the account of the southern and northern campaigns, and show us the necessity of committed obedience to God in all things.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 11:1-12:24

We already looked in some detail at the southern campaign. The northern one is given in even less detail than the southern one, although it is similar in many respects. Like the southern campaign, the one in the north is also waged against a coalition of kings who gathered together to try and repulse the Israelite conquest of Canaan. We’re told at the very beginning of chapter 11 that there was a king in the north, the king of Hazor, whose name was Jabin. He saw what was happening and decided to respond by getting together all of the forces at his disposal. So he sent out a call to all of these cities, saying that they had to get together and fight against Israel, or else they were going to suffer the same fate as the cities in the south. They amassed a great army, and they gathered together at the waters of Merom, which is a small lake just north of the Sea of Galilee. And there this great host of the kings of the north gathered together to fight against Joshua.

Europe is in the grip of the most serious displaced persons crisis since the Second World War. Pope Francis, on his recent visit to the US, has raised the issue with the President as well as in his address to Congress. But what should we as Christians make of it in light of the Bible’s teaching?

I was struck recently by a brief radio address given by a Jewish Rabbi on the morning of Yom Kippur. She spent the whole time allotted to her talking about Isaiah 58 and how it links to the deliverance of Israel in Jewish understanding.
