The Northern Campaign - Part Five

THEME: Pleasing God

This week’s lessons conclude the account of the southern and northern campaigns, and show us the necessity of committed obedience to God in all things.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 11:1-12:24

Jesus said in Matthew 5:20, "Except your righteousness exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven." What He is saying is that if you really are a justified man or woman, if His righteousness really has been imputed to you, if you have been made spiritually alive, regenerated by the Holy Spirit, there will be such a power in you and such a desire to please God that your good deeds will exceed the good deeds of the scribes and Pharisees. One thing that bothers me about the church today is that the church is so much like the world. Where do people turn to believers and say, "There is something different about them"?

The Treacherous Creek

Just outside the town in California where I was born is a creek that winds across the country, eventually flowing into the Pajaro River. Many a spot along this creek would make a magnificent swimming hole, but no boys are ever seen there. It is not even necessary for parents to tell their boys not to go near these waters. Were any new boy to suggest a swim, others would quickly tell him that the name of the creek is Salsipuedes; Spanish for "Get out if you can."

There are passages in Scripture we know only too well, but which we understand alarmingly badly. Paul’s words about love to the church in Corinth rank high among them. Far from being designed with wedding services and marriage enrichment weekends in mind, they were first spoken with a sting in the tail. One that would most certainly have been felt by his original readers.

Direct Revelation and Marriage Proposals

The Bible isn’t for the mystic or the mythic...it is for the spiritually mature. In fact, you won’t find spiritual maturity without it. To know God and self--to know how one is to be saved and how the saved are to live--are topics that cannot be parsed any other way than opening the pages of the Bible in fellowship with a local church and doing the hard work of study.

Lisa sat there, one eye squinting a bit and her heart aflutter but she couldn’t tell if it was a good flutter or not. Romantic relationships are like that. You expect to know exactly how you’ll feel at those crucial moments, and then, when they come or might be coming, it’s nothing like you thought. At least that was what it was like for Lisa as she sat across the table from Jacob--the most steady boyfriend she’d ever had.

The Northern Campaign - Part Four

THEME: Ways to Leave Nothing Undone

This week’s lessons conclude the account of the southern and northern campaigns, and show us the necessity of committed obedience to God in all things.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 11:1-12:24

Yesterday, we listed the first thing we must do if we are to fulfill Joshua 11:15, which is to truly believe on Jesus Christ by following him as a faithful disciple. The second thing is this. In Matthew 28, at the very end of that chapter where we have the Great Commission, we’re told that if we believe on Jesus, then we have an obligation to tell other people about Him. When I think of the Great Commission in terms of this verse in Joshua, what impresses me is the word “all.” What we’re told to do in the Great Commission is to teach them to obey all or everything that Jesus has commanded.

The Testimony Exhibition

During my late teens I observed the corruption of sin in a rescue mission in Los Angeles. I listened to the testimonies of men with criminal records: The first said that he had been in prison three times, and had lived a life of sin; the next had been in prison four times, and had sinned even more; the third man had had six imprisonments, and added dope to the alcohol of the first two. I was uneasy; these men seemed to be exhibitionists, though I did not know the meaning of the word at that time.

In his helpful (and for me “much used”) Dictionary of Theological Terms, Alan Cairns defines “Christology” as follows:

“The Department of Systematic Theology which deals with the doctrine of the Person of Christ the Redeemer.  It covers the following subjects:  His Theanthropic Person, His Deity; His Humanity; His Unipersonality; and His Impeccability.”

The Northern Campaign - Part Three

THEME: The Need for Obedience

This week’s lessons conclude the account of the southern and northern campaigns, and show us the necessity of committed obedience to God in all things.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 11:1-12:24

In some ways, at least as his story is told to us, Joshua was not a spectacular individual. At least he did not have a lot of spectacular experiences. There were miracles, of course, but basically, Joshua was a soldier. He was told what to do, and he did it. His strength was found in that, and that kind of obedience is a great thing.

Radioactivity

One of the most terrible aspects of atomic energy is the terrific lingering radioactivity imparted to anything nearby. Human beings go near the place where an atomic explosion has taken place at their own peril.

"Eschatology and Enjoying Your Mate"

The theological mission connected with being head of the household.

In his first lecture on Biblical Theology (available for free download on iTunes U), Dr. Gregory Beale begins to build his case that eschatology is the key to our sanctification. He even half-jokingly suggests teaching one day on the topic, “Eschatology and How to Enjoy Your Mate.” Beale claims that we could all have better marriages if we understand this connection better.

That’s worth pondering, isn’t it?
