So what is Rod Dreher's problem?

Rod Dreher on Moscow

Rod Dreher has a typically pungent piece on the matters that have apparently caused much hilarity and Scotch drinking in Moscow, Idaho.  I wonder what Rod's particular problem is?  Is he an idiot incapable of reading English?  A buffoon who doesn't understand the brilliance of self-published Muscovite rhetoric?  Some envious and evil figure out to destroy a

The Great Promise of the Scriptures

What was lost in the Fall? One could answer life, innocence, righteousness, freedom, or a host of other things, and be correct. Yet none of these garners the label "greatest loss." The greatest loss incurred by the Fall was lost communion with our Creator. But what man lost by sin, God restores by grace. Uninterrupted, unfettered, unadulterated communion with God is the great promise of salvation.

He Breaks the Power of Cancelled Sin

A response to the contemporary grace movement.

I came running to the PCA. After years in broader evangelicalism, service in a confessional church and denomination was and remains a breath of fresh air. With its commitment to the Westminster Standards and passion to advance the gospel around the world I count it a blessing to be part of the PCA. I can scarcely describe how life-giving it has been to worship and serve with like-minded brothers and sisters.

I do not consider myself a naïve person. I have been serving in churches since I was twenty-years-old.

The Southern Campaign - Part Two

THEME: Victory in the South

This week’s lessons describe another part of the conquest of Canaan, and teach us important qualities of leadership from the life of Joshua.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:16-43

Now our story picks up at that point. The routed armies were led by five kings. These five kings were apparently together directing the military operations. And when they saw the battle go against them and recognized that they were in great personal danger themselves, they hid in the cave near the town of Makkedah. And they went in to hide, thinking that in the battle the rush of the troops would pass by. Then after they had passed, the kings could emerge and make their way back to the city. They could regroup their fortresses and prepare to fight another day.

A Life which He Calls Eternal Life

My parents had been married for almost twenty years before I, their only son, was born. We all know how eagerly a son’s birth is anticipated after there has been a line of girls in a family. It would appear that my home was no exception to the rule. There was, therefore, some excitement among that household when I finally put in an appearance, and this was increased by the fact that I was the smallest of all the babies in our family. My father could carry me quite easily in one arm. I rested quite comfortably, I am told, with my head above the palm of his hand and my feet in the bend of his elbow.

A Life which He Calls Eternal Life
“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.” (1 Peter 1:3)

The Southern Campaign - Part One

THEME: A Change in the Story

This week’s lessons describe another part of the conquest of Canaan, and teach us important qualities of leadership from the life of Joshua.

SCRIPTURE:
Joshua 10:16-43

In the middle of Joshua 10 there’s an interesting change in the nature of the narrative that describes the Israelite conquest of Canaan. Up to this point in the story, there have only been three real battles. There was the attack on Jericho and the destruction of that city; the attack on Ai and its destruction; and then there was the battle at Gibeon that began outside the walls of the city and continued southward as the Jewish armies pursued the retreating armies of the southern coalition. And all of that’s been given in considerable detail.

Obvious Life

In the early chapters of the Gospel of John, we have a striking contrast between two characters who heard two great messages given by the Lord Jesus. In the third chapter, Nicodemus comes on the scene, and in the fourth chapter we meet the woman at the well. Both were privileged to hear for the first time wonderful truths concerning the work of God in the salvation of a soul.

Obvious Life

“If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.  For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” (Romans 10:9-10)

Benjamin B. Warfield wrote a little article for the Homiletic Review in 1897 titled, "The Indispensableness of Systematic Theology to the Preacher." As anything written by Warfield, it is a thoughtful and edifying piece with a clear aim. According to the Lion of Old Princeton, it is through Gospel truth that souls are saved. Thus, it is the prime business of the preacher, who possesses and is possessed by this truth, to proclaim it to men, women, and children.
